Replacing your air filter is required for basic maintenance. It's really easy to do and in most cases you wont even need tools. In general, air filter replacements should be done every 30,000 miles or even sooner if you live in dusty or severe conditions. You can check the condition of your air filter every few oil changes to make sure it is still okay.

Materials Needed

  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench

Step 1 – Locate and open air filter box

The first step is to locate the large, black, plastic air filter box. You want to remove the top portion in order to access the air filter. 4-cylinder models will require you to unsnap four clamps—one on each corner of the air filter box. 6-cylinder models will require you to loosen four bolts.

Step 2 – Remove old air filter

After you unsnap the four clamps or loosen the four bolts, you can now remove the old air filter. Remove the top portion of the filter box. If you notice any dirt or leaves at the bottom of the filter box, remove them before you install the new air filter. This will ensure that your new filter stays clean even longer.

Step 3 – Install new air filter

After removing the old filter, replace it with the new one. Most air filters are non-directional (i.e. the fit the same in either orientation), but if your specific filter is not, you will need to adjust it the same way as the old filter.

Step 4 – Finish by closing filter box

After you have the new air filter properly installed, close the air filter box. You can then proceed to snapping the clamps back into place or tightening the bolts back up. You are now done.
