A spoiler would be a sleek accessory to your Honda Accord's trunk. Not only will it give your vehicle a more aggressive flair, but for applications on the track, it can provide the added downforce to supplement traction and handling. There's a wide variety of aftermarket spoilers available for the Honda Accord, all of which follow similar instructions. Here's the DIY guide to install a spoiler on your Honda Accord today.

Materials Needed

  • Spoiler kit
  • Drill and drill punch
  • 8 and 10mm drill bits
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Felt tip pen
  • Cleaning putty
  • Pliers
  • Zip ties
  • Trunk spring removal tool

Step 1 – Remove the trunk liner

Honda Accords that are not manufactured with a factory spoiler have rubber grommets in the spoiler mounting locations. Once you remove the trunk liner, the areas for the pilot holes will be made visible.

  • Disconnect the negative (black) terminal of the battery.
  • Open the trunk, and use pliers to remove the clips around the trunk liner.
  • Pull the liner out.
  • Locate the rubber grommets underneath the trunk lid, and remove them.
  • Mark the rubber grommet area with a drill punch.

Step 2 – Drill the mounting bolt locations

  • With an 8mm drill bit, drill holes through the punch marks. Make sure to hold the drill straight and steady.
  • To clean off the holes with pliers, remove the nips of protruding metal.

Step 3 – Mark the wire harness location

  • Grab the mounting template from the spoiler kit.
  • Place it over the edge of the trunk lid, so the holes of the template line up with the mounting bolt holes.
  • With a felt tip pen, mark two additional holes on the trunk lid through the mounting template.
  • Drill an 8mm hole through the mark closer to the rear windshield. This hole is for an additional mounting bolt.
  • Drill a 10mm hole through the mark closer to the rear of the trunk lid. This hole is for the wire harness.

Step 4 – Mount the spoiler

  • Smear some cleaning putty onto the drill holes.
  • Line up the spoiler over the mounting bolt holes.
  • Snake the spoiler's wire harness through the 10mm hole.
  • Position the spoiler directly onto the trunk lid, so the mounting's bolt holes line up with the spoiler's bolt holes.
  • Fasten three 8mm bolts to the spoiler. Tighten the bolts to a snug fit.
  • Mount the other end of the spoiler.

Step 5 – Replace the trunk springs

The older trunk springs were manufactured to handle a particular trunk weight. They must be replaced with heavy duty springs to accommodate the extra weight from the spoiler.

  • Place the open-end of a trunk spring tool under the upper trunk spring, and connect the closed-end of the trunk spring tool to the end of the lower trunk spring.
  • Pull up on the trunk spring lever to gain leverage, and to safely remove the spring.
  • Use the trunk spring tool to install the new heavy duty trunk spring in the reverse order to the removal process.

Step 6 – Wire in the spoiler

  • Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the trunk lid's rear trim panel.
  • Then, remove the trunk side floor panel.
  • Route the wire harness through the trunk lid holes.
  • Secure the harness to the trunk hinges with zip ties.
  • Connect the harness to the brake light plug.
  • Re-install the trunk components, and reconnect the battery.
