This article applies to the Honda Civic/Del Sol (1992-2000) and Honda Accord (1990-2002).

Whether it's smears, smudges, streaks, or water stains, having an unclean windshield is not only irritating, but can dampen your vision while driving. The windshield is the most important window to keep clean, and this guide will show you how to make it spotless.

Materials Needed

  • Clay bar
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Newspaper
  • Rain-X glass treatment
  • Soap
  • Water

Step 1 – Move your car to a shaded location

Place your car under a shade that will cover the entire windshield. Shade will prevent the windshield surface from getting too hot and lowers the likelihood of streaks occurring when washing with a cleaner or clay bar.

Step 2 – Clean the windshield like normal

Use soap and water to clean the windshield. Then, dry it off using a microfiber cloth or newspaper.

Pro Tip

Some professionals use newspaper because the water-based ink acts like a dry polish. Wear gloves if you use newspaper because the ink may transfer over to your hands.

Step 3 – Scrub with clay bar

Lightly wet your clay bar with water or a specialized lubricant, so it doesn't stick to the windshield. Don't apply too much or the clay will decay. You can break the clay bar apart and save some for later use. If it falls to the ground, throw that piece away because clay picks up any dirt it touches.

Step 4 – Apply the Rain-X

Spray Rain-X onto the windshield and firmly wipe it down with a microfiber cloth, moving in a circular motion. Be thorough, and get it into every part of the windshield. If it leaves a haze, buff it out using a different cloth.

Step 5 – Rinse the windshield

Use a hose to rinse the windshield. If the Rain-X was applied correctly, you should see water beads trickle and fall off. Quickly dry it off with a microfiber towel.

Pro Tip

Once you've applied Rain-X or any other rain repellent, you should limit the use of your windshield wipers because they will wipe away the repellent.
