Teaming Up

These days, automakers are doing the unthinkable and working together on projects, mostly pertaining to electric and autonomous vehicles. It's happening with Ford and Volkswagen, and now with GM and Honda. The latter duo are collaborating to produce two EVs, which will be built at General Motors' North American production facilities. It's an interesting approach, for sure, but one that will save both automakers a ton of money on development and design.

The new EVs will use GM's new proprietary Ultium battery technology, while their designs will be exclusive to Honda and engineered to Honda's specific driving characteristics. Ultium battery-powered vehicles are said to offer up to 400 miles of range, and will also utilize GM's hands-free advanced driver-assist technology and OnStar safety and security services.

Sensing a Trend

Of course, this isn't the first time these two automotive giants have worked together. Previously, the two paired up on the production of fuel cells, have contributed to Cruise Origin’s autonomous driving technology, and Honda also joined General Motors’ battery module development efforts roughly two years ago.

Economies of Scale

According to Honda, this partnership will help them harness economies of scale as well as speed up the development of its electric program, while also aiding in the automaker's mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Growing the Business

Honda's current plan is to grow its EV sales to 66% of its total global sales by the year 2030. The automaker's vision behind all of this is to help the world move toward a zero-carbon society, while General Motors is working to shore up its future financial prospects by developing next-gen, low-cost battery-powered vehicles, something it's investing $20 billion to do.

Waiting Game

Both of these new Honda/GM electric vehicles are slated for a 2024 release in the U.S. and Canadian markets. So we won't have to wait too much longer to see what this latest meeting of the minds comes up with as the future of the electric automobile continues to take shape.
