Civic Type R Gets LS4 Swap Because Nothing is Sacred

LS swaps are everywhere these days. But does it make sense to swap out the Civic Type R's powerful turbo 4-cylinder with a V8?

LS Motor in a Civic?

Can it be done? We've all wondered it at one point or another. And about almost every car imaginable! LS engines are known for their modularity and reliable power. So it's no surprise that they've become a cultural phenomenon. But tucking a General Motors V8 engine under the hood of a Honda Civic might seem like a bit of a stretch...

Imagined

Well, an LS-swapped Honda Civic Type R is exactly what digital artist, Abimelec Arellano imagined. And he used his 3D modeling skills to turn his vision into (virtual) reality. These computer-generated renderings represent Arellano's thoughts on what an LS-swapped Civic should look like.

Transverse

Arellano also points out in the description of his Instagram post that GM has, in fact, engineered a transverse, front-wheel-drive LS V8 configuration, which was used in the Chevy Impala SS and the rest of its GM counterparts. He admits though, that fitting an LS motor in the Civic might require some major reconstruction of the suspension and the chassis.

Worth a Shot?

Even if the transverse front-wheel-drive V8 setup fits properly under the hood of the Civic, does it really make sense to replace the 4-cylinder with a heavier V8 that practically produces the same horsepower figures as the Civic Type R's powertrain? These are all questions that one should ask, and find convincing answers for before undertaking such a project!

Will it be Done?

Practicality isn't always the biggest area of concern when it comes to LS swaps. The simple notion of fitting a V8 where it's not supposed to be will always pique the intrigue of car enthusiasts. But will someone actually put an LS motor into a Civic? Only time will tell. What do you think of the idea?
