Honda has written a new chapter in its glorious small car history, with the new all-electric Honda E. It might be small, but it is also a proper driver's car.

A new era for Honda

The Honda E will be a first volume electric car for the Japanese brand and it has all the attributes to succeed. Honda wishes to have an all-electric vehicle portfolio by 2025 and the E will the first of many new battery-powered vehicles by the Japanese auto company. Pricing for the newcomer as been set at $32,000.

An attainable vision of futurism

Honda has a history of designing superbly styled compact cars and the new E continues that tradition. It has excellently judged proportions and many clever exterior details. You'll notice the absence of wing mirrors, which have been replaced with smaller and more aerodynamic camera pods. Don't be mistaken by the lack of rear door handles, this is a proper five-door hatchback, those rear handles have just been hidden in the window frames.

Perfectly packaged

Honda's designers have repeated the round light styling at the rear, with spherical taillights. Unlike most other hatchbacks, this new Honda E is not front-wheel drive. It features perfect 50:50 weight distribution and is rear-wheel drive, to ensure a smaller turning circle and better handling agility.

A potent little electric car

Powering the Honda E is a 35.5-kWh battery pack. You can have the Honda E in two power grades too: either 136hp or a slightly more potent 154hp version. Both electric motor options have 232 lb-ft of torque. Honda has done extensive testing of the new E and it should be good for a single-charge range of 137 miles. Recharging to 110 miles of battery capacity requires only 30 minutes.

Low center of gravity makes for good cornering

Although Honda cannot imagine many of its new E customers driving their electric hatchbacks on the limit, it is capable. At this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Honda E impressed with its poise. The low center of gravity, courtesy of those batteries in the car's floorplan, help a lot with maintaining stability through faster corners. The Honda E is also capable of 0-60mph in eight seconds.

Best of both worlds inside

There is the work of genius inside this Honda E. Large touchscreen displays offer all the intuitive digital interfacing that you have become accustomed to. But Honda has also been mindful of tradition. Hence the warmer wood inlay materials, to balance the glow of those screens. There are also a few rotary controls and buttons, to ensure slick control of infotainment volume, which is not something that is easily adjusted with a digital touch display.
