suspension question, offset and scrub radius...
Ok,
I understand basically what scrub radius IS, kinda
(its the distance from your suspension to the wheel basically right?? )
but how does it affect handling?
ALSO, just to set it in stone(because for some reason I just cant get it in my head).
a 41mm offset wheel, will be set out further than a 38mm offset wheel.. correct??
thanks.
and feel free to drop any other technical jargon on me,
i'm all for it

dont most wheels usually have a negative offset value?

Scrub radius is the distance between where the kingpin axis meets the road and the centerline of the tire. If you had zero scrub radius, when you steered the tire would turn on it's centerline. If you have negative scrub radius, the tire does not turn on its centerline and more friction and effort is needed to turn it. If you let go of the wheel it wants to return to straight. Scrub radius can be changed by altering the offset of the wheel.
Some scrub radius nis necessary to provide steering feedback and self-centering. With zero scrub radius, steering would feel numb, provide no feedback and feel, for lack of a better word, floppy Of course adding negative scrub radius makes it easier to package other suspension components too...
EDIT: FYI the kingpin axis is the invisible line that connects the upper and lower ball joints of the suspension arms

You won't see many negative-offset wheels outside the lowrider community. Most wheels for sport compacts are in the +40mm range.
Angry Joe, I think you're referring to positive scrub radius (wheels spaced further out than the kingpin axis), not negative?
Excess scrub radius can amplify torque steer and make the car feel "nervous".

SCC is not totally worthless. Dave Coleman sometimes has something interesting to say:

aaah, ok
its begining to become clearer now.
so basically, when you turn the steering wheel, the axis your turning is
actually the kingpin,
and then the scrub radius is the distance from that to the center of the tire/road contact point?
so maybe thats why when I went from 38offset(still dont remember if it was a negative or positive value.. but yes they were set out further) 15's
to stock 14" steelies, the wheels felt easier to turn on the highway.
I do miss the stability of offset wheels though.
