FK8

The FK8 Honda Civic Type R is arguably the most popular iterations of the Honda hot hatch in its history. That is primarily because it is the first Type R that has made it to the U.S. market. The American exposure has also resulted in a significantly expanded aftermarket not only Stateside but across the globe.

Aftermarket Availability

And the owner of this Type R, the UK's Razi took full advantage of that fact, starting his build very early in the production run of the FK8 in 2018. Having worked for Honda for years, he had plenty of familiarity with the product. And he was well aware of the capabilities of the Type R in stock form. But, he knew he wanted to improve upon the platform in every way imaginable.

Modifying Cars in a Game to Modifying Cars in Real Life

Having been a fan of video games like Need For Speed and Midnight Club as a child, he started to dabble in modifying real cars when he grew older. He had modified several cars prior to getting his hands on the Type R. But he knew that the FK8 had a lot more potential than it showed. So he gladly took the risk of voiding his manufacturer warranty to build something much more capable.

Let the Modding Begin

The mods started with the powertrain. The custom exhaust with a catless downpipe helps the engine breathe more freely while also significantly enhancing the car's exhaust note. Custom air intake and intercooler were installed, and a new ECU tune was put in place to help the setup achieve 420 horsepower and 416 lb-ft of torque, a massive improvement on the stock Type R's 306 HP and 295 lb-ft.

Brakes, Wheels, Tires

More power presents a need for stronger deceleration. The standard Brembo brakes are a great place to start, but Razi enhanced the brake setup by adding Ferodo DS1.11 pads and DBA T3 discs. Covering these brakes are lightweight Apex EC-7 18×9.5J ET43 wheels wearing Yokohama Advan A052 tires, adding more grip in acceleration and around corners.

Suspension Upgrades

Helping the track-ready Civic Type R stay planted around the corners are Eibach lowering springs and anti-roll bars. Additionally, the hot hatch is equipped with a hard-to-miss front splitter. And it's not just for show. According to the owner, the addition of the splitter greatly enhances the car's performance in high-speed corners.

Purpose Built

The relatively minor list of modifications has made a huge impact on the performance of this Civic Type R. It has been optimized for use on Britain's legendary race tracks, such as Silverstone. But it also still possesses on-street drivability, maintaining its adjustable suspension and creature comforts. Razi's plans were to take the car to an even higher level over the winter, adding more power and a better suspension setup. We're eager to see his progress with the Type R when it's ready to go.
