Looks a lot like the real thing

You recognize the profile as that of a Civic Type R, but why aren't the windows reflecting? And the doors appear to have styling lines that look like a strange '80s computer game graphic rendering? The answer is both simple and awesome: this is a true to scale Lego Civic Type R. An amazing vehicle built using the simple Danish toy brand's bricks.

Built from bits that you get in the box

The team of very dedicated people who built this Lego Type R was fastidious about using only original Lego bricks. Not a single custom fabrication was required, as the builders remained true to the original design, guided by CAD drawings and a life-size Type R. A total of 320,000 individual Lego bricks were used in the construction. You try and create a roundish tire from Lego bricks and see how hard it is.

Intricate details everywhere

The attention to detail shown in this project is astounding. Even the Type R's Brembo brake calipers have been recreated, with the correct color and branding on point. So how did the builders go about constructing this life-size Type R? The worked it from the ground up, building layer-by-layer to the end product you see above.

You'd never guess what was the most difficult part...

Viewed front-on the likeness and striking resemblance to a normal Type R's proportions are very evident. Strangely, the most challenging part of this Lego Type R build was not a part you'd normally associate with this kind of complexity. What challenged the build team most, was constructing the window-wipers, as their slim profile and length were given to great fragility when assembled in Lego bricks.

It might be mostly Lego bricks, but it is not light

The Lego construction yielded an amazing surface relief texture to the Type R's exterior. It is simply beyond cool to marvel at. A total of 1300 hours were spent building this Lego Type R and although it is made mostly from plastic, that does not mean it is light at all. Total curb weight or the Lego Type R is 2,870 lb, which is not that far off what a real Type R weighs. A steel frame was set in place to support the Lego structure and as such, accounts or some of that mass.

For reference

After those first few Lego Type R slides, here is the real thing. You can scroll back or reference, and check, but you'll struggle to find a discrepancy in the build. The team which created the Lego Type R set out to build the best possible likeness in Danish toy bricks, and they certainly achieved their goal. It is amazing what people can achieve when given time and budget, and plenty of Legos.
