Magical Collection

The Honda Collection Hall in Japan is a magical place, one filled with the coolest and rarest Honda vehicles on the planet. The automaker is also keen on sharing videos of these rides on its YouTube channel for those that might not be able to make the trip. The latest of which is this amazing 1997 Acura NSX Type S, a truly rare car worth pining over.

In Between

Of course, the Type R NSX gets the bulk of attention these days, but the Type S is special on its own accord. The Type S was sold exclusively in Japan from 1997-2001, and served as a mid-range model between the base NSX and the Type R. It wasn't quite as hardcore as the R, but also sportier than the regular model.

Notable Upgrades

The Type S came with a few notable upgrades, including a titanium shift knob, MOMO Zagato-style steering wheel, a lightweight rear spoiler, lightweight BBS aluminum wheels, stiffer front dampers, and a thicker rear sway bar.

Weight Savings

The Type S also features a host of weight-saving measures that include single-pane rear glass, Recaro carbon/kevlar Alcantara and leather seats, a mesh design engine cover, lightweight battery, and manual rack and pinion steering, all of which help save precious pounds over the base NSX.

More Content, Less Mass

All-in-all, the Type S tipped the scales at 45 kg (99 pounds) less than the regular NSX, coming in at just 2,900 pounds. It also came with more creature comforts than the hardcore Type R. But it was also quite expensive, with a price tag of 10.357 million yen (about $85,000).

Stunning Example

Just over 200 Type S models were built over its entire production run, making them a very rare find today. And as you'd imagine with a bone chip collectible like this one, the orange over black Type S in Honda's collection looks to be in simply stunning condition.

Rare Opportunity

We may not ever make it to Japan to see this beauty in person, but this video is the next best thing. And for many, it might also be the only time they get close to seeing one of these rare cars in person at all.
