RANT: "EK" Coupe and Sedan Exhausts Are the SAME!
For too long, I've been hearing people--sales reps, manufacturers, etc.--say that the '96-2000 Civic coupe is shorter than the sedan model. This is absolutely wrong. I was told this by a salesperson at my local tuner shop despite telling him that the dimensions are the same as verified by myself and a Helms service manual. I was window shopping for a Buddy Club Spec II, and he told me it would only fit a coupe. Wrong, buddy. The exhausts are the same because their overall dimensions--wheelbase and length--are the same. The only difference is the height. Thus, a cat-back for a '96-2000 coupe will fit a sedan.
Why am I posting this? I always read posts asking about it and have been told by reputable companies that they're different. Such as? Well, Comptech, DC Sports, and A'PEXi, to name a few. I thought they would do their homework on such matters?
First, as listed in the Honda Civic brochure of 1997, the wheelbase and length are the same. That's why I bought a sedan. I originally wanted a coupe because I, too, thought the sedan was longer but then found out they're the same when browsing through the brochure. So I bought a sedan for ease of backseat passenger ingress.
Secondly, as listed in a Helms service manual for Civics on page 3-15, the wheelbase for the coupe is 2620mm with length at 4445mm. Sedan? You got it; they're the same.
Lastly, I've personally used an A'PEXi N1 cat-back only intended for a coupe on my sedan, and it fit without a single problem. It was eventually damaged, though. But great quality, nonetheless.
Companies like Comptech have also told me that the rear bumpers are different lengths, seeing as how the sedan is "longer than the coupe." Again, I have personally swapped rear bumpers with fellow H-T member Draggin99Si. He owns a 1999 Civic Si, and yes, it's obviously a coupe! Why did we switch? He bought a '96-'98 OEM rear lip and wanted to see how it'd look on his car. (It looks great. )
So, EJ8 coupe and sedan exhausts are interchangeable, and they share the same length and wheelbase. Please be aware of this (especially if you own a sedan and have been continuously told what I've been told), and I hope companies will realize this, too.
Coupe
Wheelbase: 2620mm
Length: 4445mm
Sedan
Wheelbase: 2620mm
Length 4445mm
The end.

Of course it's true. I provided both personal experience AND evidence from a well-known and loved service manual. I wasn't just talking out of my ***. And I have no clue about the Integra exhaust.

as long as there isnt anything in the underbody of the car that would get in the way of certain exhausts im sure what you are saying is true. in fact, i always thought the EK sedans looked a little on the stubby side compared to most four doors.

i think it depends on weather or not the car has a under body cat or exhaust mani cat b/c of the down pipe length differences

and eg hatches and ek hatches CAN use the same exhaust....usually rear section on an EK is a tad bit longer....but not long enough to cause a problem

It's not like I just found this out today. I've known this for A LONG time, since 1997 when I got my car brand new. The point of this post is to put an end to all of the garbage that surrounds the myth of the EJ8 coupe versus the EJ8 sedan. Have you ever tried buying an exhaust recently? All of these aftermarket companies still tell EJ8 sedan owners that their exhausts are only meant for coupes. The EJ8 Civic has existed since 1996, yet companies that put all of this research and development into their products don't know the very BASIC dimensions of the car for which they design parts for?
Oh, and he bought the rear lip from one of our local dealers. They no longer stock the lip, though. They were selling what little of them they had left, so he grabbed a green one. But now they're all gone. I was thinking of getting one, but it wouldn't flow with my SiR lip.

Re: RANT: "EK" Coupe and Sedan Exhausts Are the SAME! (95cxhatch)
Yeah, I have known this for a while but it is good info to share with others.
Also: 92-00 Coupe/Sedan exhausts are ALL the same. I have verified this through part number comparisons and actual test fits. I took my exhaust (APEXi World Sport) off of my old 92 Sedan and put it on my friends 98 Coupe, bolted up perfectly and all the hangers and everything were perfect. Also, knowing that the coupe and sedan exhausts are the same for the 92-95 years and for the 96-00 years, one can conclude that all 92-00 Coupe/Sedan exhausts are interchangeable.

Re: RANT: "EK" Coupe and Sedan Exhausts Are the SAME! (Daniel)
May I complain about inaccurate info from companies too?
EVERY email i've sent, just to test people with questions, came back wrong. 96-98 Civics and 99-00 Civics have the same wheelbase but the FRONTS ARE DIFFERENT. I cannot tell you how many people i emailed about a "96-00 Civic Hood/headlamps/fenders/bumper) and I ask for 96-98 or 99-00 and they say the single piece will fit both. This is especially true on wholesale sites, aftermatket sites, and ebay. Anyone that looks at them can tell they are different. SO let us all conclude that the 96-98 Civic Sedan and 99-00 Civic Sedan do NOT share front headlamps, fenders, hoods, and bumpers and they are different shapes. THis is fact, and tested by looks, or my helms manual.
Everyone, do your homework, it saves money and a crapload of trouble.

i think it depends on weather or not the car has a under body cat or exhaust mani cat b/c of the down pipe length differences

If you have a cat connected to the exhaust manifold, then you can just buy an aftermarket cat for an EX and an EX header and an EX exhaust and everything will work out just fine!

Yeah I can confirm everything Daniel said. I was surprised to find out that the dimensions are the same between the coupe and sedan also. The length of the side skirts between the 2 cars was an exact match. Might I also add that I'm currently using a 96-98 Civic LX sedan rear bumper on my 99 coupe. I went this route after test fitting Daniel's sedan bumper on my car first. It bolted up perfectly.

to add a little bit to this thread about sideskirts - they ARE DIFFERENT...
i got screwed over by this local company that sold me coupe sideskirts for my EK and they do NOT fit perfectly. sure the length is fine, but the mounting is totally off because the coupe uses all that extra space after the door (towards the rear) to mount, but the sedan obviously has another door there so they do NOT fit without some fabrication.

i was about to say the same thing about the bumpers...learned that from dave at jdmshit.com when i got a rear lip for a buddy. if i remember correctly its also true for the 92-95 civics
