Default 1994 integra dash removal and replacement...many pics

My friend's 94 integra LS has the hated tan interior, (at least we hate it), so it had to come out since painting/vinyl was not an option. We managed to find 97% of all the black interior pieces needed (thanks jose(orangina), dave from hempstead(urbanracer), and tony(sikcivic666) for all the pieces). Time to bite the bullet and pull the dash.

1. Take off the negative battery cable (duh , but people forget), pull out the seats, removed all screws from center armrest console, center shifter console, and remove.....I suggest using little sandwich bags and masking tape to label....there are going to be a lot of scews and bolts

2. Next were all smaller plastic panels under the dash, steering column, and the glove compartment. For the glove compartment, there are two little tabs that can be turned to the side alowing your glove compartment to come all the way down when you open it. Then you can unscew the small screw on the glove compartment arm, and remove the little arm, allowing the glove compartment to come all the way down.
You now have access to the metal bracket holding the screws(3) and one bolt for the glove compartment. Remove glove compartment.
You can also unbolt the metal bracket holding the srs airbag on the passenger side at this time and unplug bag, it will just hang there (see pic). Your dash should look like this now.

3. At this point I wanted to remove the steering wheel, but I was voted down 2 to 1; I should have vetoed their vote since I was the one doing most of the work, but oh well. Please take off the steering wheel if you want to do this.....makes things much easier when actually taking the dash completely off. Also you can leave the passenger side airbag, stereo, and cluster in the dash while removing, they can be removed once you have the dash out of the car. Anyway........
There are two bolts on each side of the dash, the part that is covered by the door when shut, just flip off the small plastic covers, and wrench off (10 mm as most of the bolts in the dash removal are).
Next pry out the clock at the top of the dash, and remove the bolt behind it.
There's another bolt on the lower portion of the dash where the cig lighter and ashtray use to be, out.
There are a couple other bolts along side the lower part of the driver side of the dash.
4. Attempt to pull the dash out slightly, the dash is really loose at this point just from undoing all the bolts/screws.....I thought it would still be clipped in, but it wasn't. Don't slide it forward too much, it's just to give you a little spacing so you can see what wire harnesess need to be unplugged and untangled.
Prepare to spend sometime on your back with your head stuck up a dark tight spot, (the driver side dash), once under there, unplug a large grey, light green, and blue harness, (see pic)

then look over to the center part of the dash, and unplug a large grey harness (may vary according to the sound system setup you have), a smaller white harness, and a smaller grey harness.
look back to the driver side of the dash, and there will be a large metal bracket, aluminum looking, it will be held on with a couple bolts, remove this piece, and detach the tiny grey plug from the harness attached to the metal bracket, it has an orange and black wire going into it as seen in the pic below.
as for the tiny green harness in the pic below, it wasn't plugged into anything on my dash, and I didn't bother plugging it into anything on the new dash, it was just hanging there. If anyone knows what this is for, let me know. Thanks. here's the pic:

At this point we thought we were home free and the dash was coming out. We forgot about the alarm system. We were lucky the installers did a good neat job. We located the brain, and pulled the harnesses, we isolated the valley wire/switch and led wire, and unhooked them from the dash. Then found one more wire that ran to the dash that was sodered into the dash harness.
Rather then cut this wire, we simply unpinned it from the alarm harness with a paper clip. After the dash was out, we would carefully cut this wire, and resoder it to the correct wire on the new dash (a green wire with pink stripe).

5.The dash was ready to come out, this is a two person job, (three if you absolutely have to leave the steering wheel in ). The thing was a bitch to manuever around the steering wheel, and out the passenger side door, but it went. Here are some pics or victory

At this point we also had a black carpet, so the beat to hell beige carpet was outta here:

6. Now the dash was out....woo hoo.......:

time to take out the cluster, airbag, and stereo.
The stereo differs from one car to the next, so I'll leave that alone.
The cluster has two scews on the bezel, then slide it out, then the cluster itself has three screws, unscrew and carefully pull out. there are two large blue harnesses to unplug on the back of it along with a brown little clip. Unplug the harnesses carefully and yank that little brown clip since it just holds the wire.
The airbag has two deepset screws, you'll need an extension on your ratchet. Unscrew, and begin to unclip and pull out the airbag unit; it can be a little tough, but it will come out.

7. Match up both dash units and make sure the one your putting in has a complete dash harness with no cut wires, also be sure to check the dimmer switch wire and cruise control wire where applicable.
If all the wires and plugs are accounted for, replace the airbag, stereo, and cluster in the new dash.

8. Again it was a bitch getting the new dash in the proper position around the steering wheel inorder to get it back installed. Then it happened .........while trying to slide the dash between the steering wheel and the windshield.... the right angle wasn't found, and too much pressure was placed against the windshield, and it cracked in a beautiful spider web pattern, turning a very affordable project, into a less afordable project
My friend was pissed, but he was the one pushing too hard, so whatcha gonna do.

9. Reverse steps 4 and 3, if you checked your dash/harnesses before time, then there should be no surprises.

10. Reinstall new carpet and center console, and that was enough for one afternoon

sorry, the pics disappeared with we.todd.did.racing and the computer they were on is long gone as well. Should've hosted them on iserve- the pics were good; could've still been helpful for some.

thanks guys, yeah tan sucks, and it was my first time for the dash part, so I figured it might help some other first timers out there one day.
It was also my first write up; I'm sure I could've been more detailed, and maybe a little neater in my format. But hey, it's a start...............

my friend had an option to pick up the passenger side airbag in black, but decided he couldn't justify the cost just for a color change on that piece. He's going to vinyl it in black, or paint it.
I'm hooking him up with my black steering wheel from my RS, when I install my itr wheel (usdm) in mine..........should've done it already, but procrastination has ruled

Are you planning on doing something with the tan airbag and steering wheel, as well as the silver vents?

Looks sweet! I feel for ya, since I went thru a similar thing, but that was just for a stereo install.

I definately agree, take off the steering wheel to get the dash out!

I have the tan plastic out of the rear of my teg, and I'm just working on painting it black. The rear seats will stay out of the car, and just the plastic and carpet will go back in, to keep things looking clean.

I broke my glass also when removing my dash with the steering wheel still mounted. Next time I will remove the steering wheel! Oh well, $150 for a new windshield.

So did you put in used factory carpet, or new aftermarket?

haha, dave, what's up man? Glad to see you on HT, and I can sell anyting ......no really, I'll probably just remove the dash wiring harness, climate control, cruise control switch, dimmer switch, and whatever else I can salvage, and chuck the dash.

yeah I know, I tried to find your thread to link you, but I'm glad you found it. As for more pics of the wiring, sorry I didn't take anymore, but I can try to answer any questions you may have from memory.

thanks, and the carpet is used oem. IT looks a lot nicer and darker in person, but the flash from the camera made it look washed out.

As for the tan steering wheel and passenger airbag and silver vents.....I'm passing on my black steering wheel from my RS to my friend, and he is going to paint the passenger airbag cover, and the silver vents will just have to stay there for now, though I think it's just a cover, and can be peeled off.

thanks and no problem........feel free to post some pics of how your job goes. I wasn't looking forward to doing this, but procrastination ended when my friend got his all black interior kicked out his apartment
it was now or never.
Good luck with your change over

yeah it can be a pain in the ***, but it's a good experience, and it feels even better when it's done. You feel like you are driving a new car, at least when sitting inside looking out
