4ws error codes - What next??
Hi, I have a 93 Lude V-tec 2.2.. I'm getting a 4ws light every so often, then the rear steering fails to operate.. It throws up an error 62.. But I doon't know where to check what this means or even how to go about sortin it..
I also have a CEL light code 8 - Crank angle Sensor.. does anyone know the location of this in my engine. (anyone have any pics).. I'm a bit of a novice mechanic, however I have a good engineering background..
All help really appreciated.. This site rules.
Many thanks.

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (pervyperry)
i have a 93 4ws and i know that sometimes the connections to your rear steering unit can become coroded/dirty. i would check there first for that problem, follow the circuit up or ohm to ensure integrity of the circuit. i would eliminate all other options before exploring the option of the rear steering unit.
good luck

Re: 4ws error codes - What next??
I have been told that the error 8 on my cel is more than likely a dirty sensor or loose connection..
Still looking for it.. lol
Does anyone know where she might be..?

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (pervyperry)
I am getting the same error code on my car. After cleaning out the 4WS ECu with connection cleaner, making sure that all the ground wires were clean and making a good connection, testing the voltage going to the 4WS ECU, checking the fuses for the ECU, and resetting the 4WS ECU.
I am going to change the 4WS ECU and use one from a 93-94 4WS Prelude. I hope this fixes it.
This is the ONLY problem I ahve with my car too.

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (pervyperry)
As there are many asking people, I will describe what to do (it is a copy of mail sent to pervyperry):
I will describe you how to do. To do this you must be familiar with some electromechanics. If you are not, please ask someone to do this, otherwise you can permanently damage the 4WS unit. And sorry for my poor english - I have learnt it at school, but never used after.
I have bought a second 4WS unit (mine is working fine for the moment), when I put it into my car for tests it was showing a permanent error code 62: rear accurator or something like that.
As my accurator worked fine with my original unit, I considered that the problem must be inside 4WS unit. After some hours I found a problem: broken solderings inside 4WS unit, due to age of the unit or (and) vibrations.
The solution is to resolder these broken points inside the unit.
1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove 4WS unit from car (before to get access you have to take off left rear seat and rear moulding inside trunk): disconnect 3 (If I remember well) connectors, 1 or 2 grounds, remove metal cover, and finally remove the unit.
3. Open 4WS unit (6 screws) and carefully put the cover (there is an electronic board connected with one electrical stripe) on the side. I used a big large book to put the cover on and not to brake the stripe. Finally you will have cover on the left side (laying on the book) and open 4WS unit on right side.
4. Remove internal metal cover you will see on the right side (some screws) and take it off.
5. You will see a lot of electronical (and electromechanical) parts inside. There are two black boxes (about 1 cm x 1.5 cm) little under the center of the unit. These boxes are 2 small relays. The problem is there!!! , but on the other side of electronic board, so next step is....
6. Remove the main electronic board from the box: remove all screws that fix the board to the box and other components: I am unable to say you exactly how many of them you have to unscrew - I just don't remember, but you will see yourself what is keeping the board in place. Also it is necessary to unscrew 8 big transistors from box (serving as radiator).
7. When the board is unscrewed, put some protecting paper (ex. newspaper) on the cover board laying on the book and carefully extract the board from aluminium box. Put it on the newspaper with solderings side upper.
8. These 2 relays are soldered 4 or 5 points every of them. These are big solderings. I took a magnifing tool (don't know exact english name - zoom ???) and carefully watching the relays solderings I considered ALL of them were broken.
9. Resolder all relays points and mount the unit.
10. After reputting it in the car problem's GONE!!!!

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (wstef)
wstef is a genius..
This seems to (touch wood) have worked a treat..
When I opened up the 4ws ecu I indeed found loose solderings on the relays.. (only 2 mind)..
Even though my soldering is not very good (a bit naff to be true), the error code has gone and I have yet to see it again..
Thanks again wstef.. I owe you one..
Now anyone have any pics of the Crank Angle sensor or can someone tell me where she hides..
Many thanks again.
Lee

Hey man, you are a magnificent bastard. lol
Dude, it COMPLETELY works now!!! (Knock on wood!!)
I JUST plugged it in. I worked on it last night. It isn't even mounted completely and it is still working properly. I started it up, drove it for 7 miles, turned it off, turned it back on immediately, and it worked. Then I waited 5 minutes, tried it again and it worked fine. Drove it again for 7 miles, got home, started it up immediately, and it worked again.
You helped me out BIG TIME!! You have NO IDEA!! The car was actually pretty dangerous to drive.
Thank you SOOO MUCH!!!

I am very glad it has helped to you. It seems this problem is very common and NOT depending of vehicle year (the 4WS unit is the same in all 4gen cars)...
How many points has been broken in your case?

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (wstef)
Actually, they all looked to be in good condition. I did all 10 sodering points (5 for each relay) and it seems to be working fine.
That's one reason why I wasn't sure if this was going to to work for me because all the original sodering connections looked fine. If anything, 2 looked "questionable". But honestly, they didn't look bad enough to cause me to believe they were not good.
Oh well, I will test it further to see if it continues to work.
How long has it been since you re-sodered yours?? Has the 4WS light came on since you re-sodered the 4WS ECU??

They all look fine with "naked eye" , you really can't see the brokenings without a big magnificent and a halogen lamp on the side.

About 2 month ago, the light has never came on since this time.

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (wstef)
Man that is fantastic! This is why forums like H-T are so valuable. I have a 93 4WS, before this an 88 old style mechanical 4WS. I was worried when I bought this car that there would be problems down the road with the electronics.
Fortunately (knock on wood!) I have only had minor issues that were always solved either by turning off the ignition and restarting or pulling the fuse, but spent many hours in the helms manual trying to help a friend with a 4WS code.
I never solved his problem and he didn't want me tearing his computer... wish I would have.
Thanks for the info wstef, good to have people like you around.
(P.S. Your english is pretty good, in fact as good as or better than many of us.)

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (AMIDOTHERS)
Huh, I'm going to have to take a look and see if mine has any problems like that. I have not had many problems with mine in the car. But I'll check the extra one I have. If it is a problem maybe I'll see about getting some pics to make an official write up...

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (Sephro)
I gave my car a pretty through shakedown yesterday and a little this morning. The 4WS light has yet to appear. This is the first time it has ever worked consecutively.
HERE IS THE FIX: By SEPHRO! He did the writeup.

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (Arch-Angel)
Really great news in this thread. I would like to add that this problem can happen to any electronics, mostly for big and heavy electronic parts, that are mechanically stressed - typically interior fan switch etc. (it hapenned to me). Always try to resolder these parts, even if you don't see any fault there and test it again.

You get the codes the same way you would get the CEL codes. Just watch the 4WS light instead of the CEL.

OMG- this is good stuff. I have been lurking around the site for days now researching and reading all of the 4WS threads. It all seemed grim until now.
I have had 4WS issues for a while now and like some, I felt very afraid to drive with the system not working. My rear wheels DO NOT lock in the straight position. I have caught ruts on the highway and feared for my life. No Joke.
I am throwing a code 71. I will pull apart the 4WS computer this week and post results.
Thank you.

Re: 4ws error codes - What next?? (five-0)
for all who just "fixed" your 4ws... wait a day or two before you get your hopes up that you fixed it.
if i unplug my battery for a few minutes my 4ws light goes away and comes back the next day. so some of you may have the same problem as i do.
i do not think that the solder points are my problem given that my 4ws does work if i reset the ECU. however, it only works for a day or two. that is what leads me to believe that my solder points are fine and it is most likely something else.
im not trying to proove wstef wrong as his method obviously fixed his car and some others... but i dont think that the solder points are the cause of everyones 4ws problems

Of course, it will not resolve ALL problems of 4WS system.
The thread is beginning by question about error code 62, and the answer is to resolder the relays.
