how to roll back or forward odometer. (for use when swaping gauges only)
I already posted this in another thread, but I thought I would start its own thread to help people searching for this info.
heres one way to change the odometer to match the one you are swaping it with.
PS. i am not responsible for any damage you do to your gauge. do this at your own risk.
first take the gauge out of the car, if you have not done so. i'm geussing you can do that. just remove the screws holding the cover on, then unscrew the cluster, then unplug it.
now that you have your cluster out of the car, remove the three screws on the back that hold the front cover on.
now you can separate the clear plastic cover, and the black face plate.
you do that buy pushing down on the tabs and spreading them apart.
then remove the 4 screws holding in the odometer gauge.
now you should be able to slide out your gauge. it should look like this
pop off the little black cap on the needle
then pop off the needle pulling it strait up.
now remove the 2 screws on the back of the gauge
now you should see this
then pry out on one side of the smaller gear shaft with a screw driver, just enough so that you can rotate the numbers. the smaller gears are what keep the numbers from spining.
here you can see the shaft tilted slightly away from the numbers.
now you can spin the number to any position. like so
now heres the hard part. you have to line everythin back up. if you don't do it perfect, it won't work right, and the numbers won't be in alignment. first make sure all the numbers are on the exact same line. then press the smaller gear shaft back in making sure the all the little gear are in the same position, and the little metal tabs press flat against the square section on the smaller gears.
if you have gotten everything lined up, then you need to now put it all back together. install in reverse order up to the needle step. do not put the needle on at this point. screw the gauge back onto the cluster, and then put the black face plate back on. this way you should have everything back together except the needle and clear plastic cover.
now plug the cluster into the car. turn the the key on but do not start the car. make sure some lights come on in the cluster and that you have power. now start the car. make sure the rpm gauge is working. with the car not moving, the shaft that the speedo needle goes onto should now be in the 0mph position. you can now push the needle back onto the shaft.
I like to press the needle onto the shaft where the needle points to the postion just behind the little stop peg for the needle, then when the needle is pushed in place, i can just bend the needle over the little peg, thus giving it a slight preload on the needle to make the needle return to 0mph when you come to a stop.
now you can put the little black cap back on the needle, and push the clear plastic cover back on, and install everything else back like normal.

Also be sure that the tiny gears are positioned correctly or you will get unusual results. It's also very possible to disconnect the odometer in this method and keep a working speedometer.

Re: (eric8876)
I didn't know the ECU records the miles. And if it does, i'm sure theres ways to reset the miles on the ECU too, or swap it for a nother one. People are going to do illegal things no matter what, its hard to stop them. I'm just posting some info to help people doing guagecluster swaps.

Re: (iNtoXicaTedSPOON)
the needle should just pull off and push on. unless you break something taking it off, it should be fine. but you should pay attention to the position of the needle when you take it off.

all first of all im sure most of us knew how to do that but if anyone or there bust a car out there anytime soon and the miles were rolled back you have someone to blame

If most of us know how to do it, then why am I to blame. Shady people are going to do shady things no matter what. If anything, this thread should help you fix your car being off by 10mph.

Good write up. I needed something like this because I am planning on getting a JDM cluster. I didn't want to cheat people either by putting on my STOCK cluster with my old miles still recorded when I sell the car.

Re: (iH8RICERZ)
why not just take out a fuse for the odometer on the fuse box when u are daily driving ur car for work or school. THis is wutt I did and even though my speedometer don't work, I have a couple of gauges showing MPH and RPM evenrytime I drive with the speedometer off. Good write up anyways!
