Default Problem with my B16

Well, I was goin down the interstate today doin about 70mph, and all of a sudden the car bogs down and I thought it was that gay crap where it hesitates and I have to floor it to get goin, but NO! It doesnt even rev up when I floor it. So, I pull over on the nearest exit and put it in neutral, it dies. I cant get it to start back up. I poped the hood and there was smoke coming from the front and back of the engine. It tries to turn over but wont catch. I am thinking it is my water pump, but I have no idea. I am gonna take it apart in the morning to see if my timing belt is stripped or not. If it isnt, I have no idea what my problem could be.

The engine is getting gas, so it isnt the fuel pump or filter (which wouldnt explain the smoke anyways).

I had to have the car towed home

it was windy outside so that could make the smoke travel around the engine I guess (from the timing belt cover).

Check your internal coil, igniter.. etc... in other words, it could be your dist.

Do you think its my dizzy? I think it is firing because when it first happened yesterday, it would start for like a second and die again. Now it doesnt do anything but turn over and make a strange noise.

BAD NEWS! I took my cam gear cover off and the timing belt is fine, so that eliminates the water pump as well. I took the distibutor cap off and the button is fine. I checked the fuel pump, it is getting power. The head doesnt look damaged under the valve cover. I dont know what else to check.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I have class tonight and work tomorrow, this thing must be fixed by tomorrow. I really cant afford to take it to someone to charge labor simply to look at it.

I think I am. Is there a way I can check.

I am going by what I have observed (it ran for like a second after the problem happened when I tried to start it again).

its gonna be fuel or spark..check your timing, battery, wires for good connections,if you know your getting fuel then its probably something to do with the distributor or ignition system

well, i set the timing and put the valve cover back on. I went to crank it and got nothing. I held it for a while and the was a violent sounding knock at a certain point of revolution.

I think the head is fine. I cranked it while the cover was off and the valves all work fine, cams are getting oil and the cams look good.

Seems to me that maybe a I spun a rod bearing?

What do you think?

well usually if you spin a bearing the motor will still run. check the oil level, maybe you threw a rod.

set timing to make sure its all lined up and good

do a compression test on each cylinder

check for spark, take off a spark plug, put it back in the wire, ground the threads of the spark plug by putting it again bare metal and crank the engine and it should spark

Well, it kinda sound like a knocking. Like a violent shaking knock, and only at a certain point.

How can I tell if I threw a rod? What would that damage and what would need to be done to repair that?

I have already checked for spark. I have this special tool that looks like a spark plug with aligator teeth on it.

I am going to check cylinder compression tomorrow after I get off work. I will let you know how that goes tomorrow. (btween 3-5pm)

A honda technician said my vtec solenoid might be "clogged with oil". WTF? I thought it was supposed to have oil run through it. How could it get cloged by it? He also said a new one is lik $260, so F that. Is there any way I can clean it out or something? I know how to test it, I need to do that tomorrow as well.

Thanks for your input thus far guys

do a compression test first

then go from there.

if you totally lost compression in a cylinder this could explain why your car wont turn on

Results of my compression test:

#1) 200
#2) 182
#3) 130
#4) 200

Does it look like something is wrong with cyl. # 3? If I had a bent valve would that stop the engine from cranking?

Also, my question about the bearing being spunw as never addressed. If that did happen, what would that entail?

In the next day or two; most likely tuesday, I will drain the oil and take the oil pan of to check my crankshaft.

Also, today when I did the compression test, teh loud clanking noise has gone away. The engine still soudns like it is out of time. I dont get it.

Still stumped
