Default FS/WTT: 1988 Mazda 323 GTX 4WD Turbo 1.6l - Phoenix, Arizona

Hi folks,

Story

Selling my 1988 Mazda 323 GTX. It's a pretty "rare" car (less rare than say a Ford RS200 but more rare than a Subaru WRX) and quite a neat little thing.

Bought the car in December as a fun second car. Well, I'm going back to school so "fun" is going to be limited to keggers and Ramen noodles, not turbo hatches for me.

Short history: Mazda sold them to the public to qualify for Groupe B rally. The US was only lucky enough to get them in 1988 and 1989. People say there are anywhere from 1200-2000 of these in the US, but I don't even think Mazda knows, never seen the same number listed twice.

Bought it from a friend at work who had three GTX's (!) and needed to get rid of two so he could focus on his rally car. So I chose the hot little black hatch. It easily passed AZ emissions last year (has until November I think?) as it does have a cat and runs real close to AFR of 12 all through the revs. He had it dyno'ed and it pulled 150HP at all four wheels, uncorrected. Not bad for a 16 year old 1.6l with parasitic 4wd drive train power loss. I recently changed the fluids and put in a new brake master cyl and bled the brakes. The reservoir was leaking at the o-rings leading to the master cyl and noone sold a rebuild kit so I bought the whole thing, ahh well.

Engine

o 1.6l B6T - Essentially the same as the Miata 1.6l DOHC 16 valve B6 series motor but with beefier rods and lower compression pistons. The head is a little different too. It's a non-interference design, no bent valves if the timing belt goes.
o IHI VJ-14 turbo
o Full time 4WD. Has a full diff lock button making it 50/50 (don't use it on pavement!).
o Remapped ECU (90% sure it's a RoadRace Eng. one) -- the AFR on the dyno chart was ~12 throughout most of the rev range)
o Blitz SBC boost controller (currently set for 10psi and 15psi)
o GReddy Type S BOV (oooh it's anodized, so pretty!)
o Custom intercooler, turbo, and intake piping. It's quite an awesome setup. Unfortunately some of it wasn't powder coated so it's got surface rust, it still works 100% though, just ugly.
o 626/Probe intercooler "front mounted"
o 2.5" exhaust downpipe back
o I believe it has a rebuilt head and a replacement shortblock from another GTX -- not 100% certain.
o NO GRINDS IN THE TRANSMISSION! Praise Jesus! The weakest link on these cars is the transmission, and this one is 100%.

Interior

o Tint (it's old but works)
o Power windows
o Crank sunroof that tilts or slides into the roof
o Awesome GTX seats with a bunch of adjustments
o Grant wheel (WOW AUTOZONE!!1one)
o Cheapo A-pilar pod (ugly screws, sorry, wasn't my install) with Autometer boost gage
o Momo brake and clutch pedals
o Keyless entry (makes the parking lights flash when locking/unlocking - faux alarm, heh)
o Crappy old CD player, speakers and such -- who needs 'em when you have spool up and BOV to atmo?

Suspension/Chassis/Exterior

o Four wheel disc brakes
o GTR front bumper with Hella driving lights
o GTR hood vents
o Hood pins
o 179k miles on chassis

Issues:

o No A/C, it had it, and still has some of the lines but I don't have the parts.
o Water pump whines, it's going to need to be changed soon. I'm too damn lazy to do it (silly FWD cars having the "front" of their motors next to shock towers makes me cry. It was so easy on my Miata.)
o Drivers window jumps off the track when it gets towards the top, so you need to guide it.
o Drivers power window switch is flakey and you have to push it a few times to make it go down, but not back up. Probably just needs some contact cleaner. Again, I'm too damn lazy.
o Fuel gage acts weird, I've been told it's common on GTX's
o The car has exchanged hands alot in the last few years here in AZ. I think people (like me!) believe it's a great idea to get the car in the winter then realize when it's 115* out that it was a poor idea! Not that this is an "issue" per say, but you might be put off by it.
o It is a 16 year old car, there are squeaks, rattles, and all the other fun little gremlins that can annoy some in this car.

Price/Trade/Contact

$3,500.

-or-

I'd like to get an EF Hatch, MUST have A/C! I'd have to get cash along with it, obviously, at least $2k. I don't need a garage queen hatch, just not a shell please as I'll be driving it to school. I'd much prefer to get money instead, but if you'd like to give the Mazda turbo treat a taste and don't have all the dough and have an EF hatch, we can talk.

Any questions please feel free to ask: jesse@waffleiron.org

Pictures
Please be kind to the link, there are a bunch of thumbnails with links to bigger picks, but it's not too fast of a connection:
http://www.mervernation.com/~hoagie/gtx/gtx.html

Here's a few select pics, lots more at the website.

More in depth pics of the IC, turbo, and intake at website. See the shiney master cyl, oooh aaah.

Good idle and the gas gage is miraculously working. Note 18-19 vacuum at idle, what other B6 turbo folks report is healthy.

Have VIN, will show up in carfax report in my next post.
Thanks for the bandwidth!

What year? I dig those Unfortunatly if my memory serves, they're worth at least $4k? Thus putting it in the I don't get money with the trade range, which is not good as I need monies for school. Would be cool though! That's why I want an EF hatch: a mini wagon/hatch that's a daily driver and cheap to purchase and maintain.

Galant VR-4 great car!

Edit: whoops, just saw your sig, it's a 91.

Nope completly different. The late eighties were a great time for small motors with turbos though. Omni GLH, 323 GTX, Turbo Colt/Mirage, RX-7 TII's, Capri turbo (B6t as well, but was the early 90s I think).

The more I think about my situation the more I'd like to trade for a 88-91 Civic hatch and cash. I really need reliable transportation with AC as I'm going to be selling the Miata as well -- tuition, arg!

Somebody out there must want a hot turbo 4wd hatch and have an EF they want to trade?

EF must have AC, manual trans, prefer Si model (not a big deal, though). Doesn't matter if it's all different color body panels, but it must run good.

EF + cash = hot **** GTX for you!

And if you can find a person who does, I'll give you $100 for a finders fee!

Thanks for the bump...and bump again!

Might consider a CRX + cash, but would much prefer an EF hatch + cash.
