I was tired of not being able to drive my car when it was raining or it sucked when in the morning the inside of my windows would get all fogged up. I said screw it and decided to go along with making my own plug but out of acrylic glass which I got at homedepot for about $30. Right now it kinda looks messy because it has sylicone all over, but i'll clean it up this weekened and take some final pics. But this is what it looks like now.

cool, can you take a pic of the hardware you used, especially the L bracket. id like to know how to find this hardware piece without having to fab em myself.

Damn, I threw away the packaging from that. Its a 4 pack of L brackets that include the screws and nuts with it. I had to modify them for the back because the lip was small to screw down the bracket.

The plug was cut exact so its pressure fit on there, I used clear waterproof sylicone around the plug and in the screws. NO water is getting in that sucker.

I got them at homedepot, it was like $1.50 for 4 universal brackets with the screws and nuts. I forgot the exact namebrand, but if you take off your sunroof assembly and look at the lip where you would bolt them down to, you can see how long of a bracket you would need.

I was going to use my stock sunroof and just silicone it shut myself, not a big fan of leaking and whistling with the wind.

Dont do that, thats how my panel flew off, the rubber seal held on to the sylicone so well, that the panel started to pop up and eventually the wind blew it off. And about the tint, I was thinking of tinting it now, but i'll clean it off some, then get it tinted from the inside.

prolly weighs less than my keyboard. "thats all I could think of right now comparing the weight" Its 1/4" thick. I cant believe I didnt do this long time ago.

I believe acrylic glass is pourous and it can not be tinted since it breaths and will make the tint bubble and peel.

honestly, im really glad you did this. i got hounded by the maker of the CF plug about how great his product is and its so worth $300 just because its made of CF and that i shouldnt call it a waste of money ("bling") compared to other materials and options. you seem to have done a great job, and certainly in comparison to $300 for CF, its even better. I was planning on doing the same thing, except with just steel for racing rules, but never got around to it.

btw, they sell window tint paint at hobby stores. its kinda hard to work with actually since its very "thin" liquid, so spray in very light coats and let it dry and make sure everything is clean because the surface tension will cling to any imperfection. i used this when working with RC car bodies made of lexan. but it might work well for what you want.

thats what tyson just said looks good, you should have used 3M window weld to seal it, works much better, tape off like .25 from the edges, fill, spred with finger, for perfect finish use a ice cube to smooth and let harden over night

Yeah I was thinking of the same thing, I was thinking of using the rubber seal that was on the sunroof originally. I'll go by homedepot again this weekened and see what I can find. And I'm also thinking of cutting the sunroof hole on the headliner to the size of the sunroof plug.

I'm not going to touch that argument with a 10' pole, but I will say this...

A reasonable bracket material is aluminum angle stock. Pick up a 4' piece of 1/4" and snip/saw/grind it to your desired lengths. It's just wide enough to hold pop rivets and you can use longer pieces for straight sections and short ones for the curves. And they weigh much less than steel (unless you're using the steel roof plug, in which case you might not care).

The lexan looks good. I would never leave it clear in AZ or I would fry, but you might get away with it.

Good call, that stuff would work really well! Sturdy and lightweight, and it will provide a lot of support as well.

I have been playing with acrylic for a few weeks now myself. I am using it to make a fishtank lid. (This is related... kind of - just keep reading.) First I tried .090 thick and now I am using something like .200 thick. Those are the only 2 sizes that OSH hardware carries as they are also the standard thicknesses for replacing glass.

I had to replace the .090 because it bowed in. It severly sagged. I even tried cutting some strips of the .090 and bonding it to the sheet for extra support, but over a couple days it still sagged. So I bumped up to the .200 stuff and it held flat for a few days and then began slowly sagging. It's not as dramatic, but it's still not nice.

This tank has no lights on it and it's held at a solid 80 degrees without any direct sunlight. I'm wondering what your plug will look like after a day in the hot sun! I suggest you find some way of supporting it wih a cross bar or something BEFORE the saging begins!

Forget that Over priced POS CF plug, $300 but a small piece of CF WTF do they think I am... stupid or something. that's like $20 for a bottle of coke.
