Default USDM Foglight Switch Wiring - How To

I've done a search and found that there are many questions regarding wiring the USDM foglight switch. The closest I found to the answer was from ULTiMaX99 but it was a little hard to understand. These instructions should work for any foglight kit, but were written specifically for the JDM front end foglights.

For those of you lucky enough to have the entire USDM foglight kit, the entire installation should be plug-and-play. The kit should contain a foglight switch, two harnesses (one from the switch to under the dash, and the other for the engine bay) and a relay, in addition to some non-wiring related items. Unfortunately, Acura has discontinued the foglight switch (08V31-ST7-20051), the switch harness (08V31-ST7-20007), and the foglight harness (08V31-ST7-20008), which could all be bought with the complete kit.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an OEM USDM foglight switch and part of the foglight switch harness. Mike M has already written up an excellent JDM foglight switch wiring how-to, so I used the information presented there to help write a how-to with a USDM switch.

First of all, here's the whole picture (original image courtesy UK Spec B18C6):

Now, here's a picture of the foglight switch and the switch harness:

The first pin is connected to a red/white wire. I found that applying power to this wire turned the illumination on and off according to the switch position. This will be used as the "switched input" as seen in the diagram above.

The third pin is connected to a red/yellow wire. I found that applying power to this wire turned the illumination on, irrelevant of the switch position. This will be used as the "switched output" as seen in the diagram above.

The fifth pin is connected to a black wire, used for ground. That should be self explanatory

If you do not have a switch harness, just use wires with a female spade crimped on to it, and connect them straight to the switch itself.

Here's another picture of the switch and harness:

Next, we have a picture of the 30 amp relay:

Now on to the engine bay (pic courtesy SonicBlueTeg):

The brown plug is connected to a blue wire. As Mike M stated, it is already in the car's harness, and goes through the firewall under the dash. You want to cut this brown connector, but be careful not to cut it too short, because you want to use this on the other end (under the dash)

This next picture might look confusing, but it really isn't:

Now after cutting the brown connector off, we want to run the cable to each foglight. I used a splice connector after extending the blue wire, running one to the driver's side foglight, and the other to the passenger side foglight.

Now, the other end of this cable (under the dash):

Take the connector that you cut from the engine bay, and connect it here. Extend that wire and connect the other end to the relay.

On to the most important part - the power:

This is a picture of my '97 Integra's fusebox. I'm not sure if the 94-97 are all the same, and was told that the 98+ is different. The orange wire on the left draws power constantly, and is connected to a fuse, which then goes to the relay. The green wire only draws power when the headlights are on. This makes it so that the foglights can turn on only when the parking lights, lowbeams, or highbeams are on. The other end of the wire connects to the first pin on the switch.

Here's the finished product. I think I mounted it right side up, any comments on that?

I haven't been able to figure out how to wire the foglights so that they turn off when the highbeams are on. Mike M stated that there is a wire wrapped in blue tape around the headlight switch, but I could find no such wire. I did however find a wire that drew power when the highbeams were switched on. I'll talk to him and update this thread when I figure this out.

Special thanks go out to board members Mike M (for the JDM switch how-to), len (for the switch), jdmspoonitr (for the switch harness), denny (for helping me with the engine bay wiring and letting me borrow his heat gun), and Aaron M (for the moral support online)

Hopefully this will be of help to you guys. Please feel free to post any flames/comments/suggestions/questions/corrections to this thread. Thanks!

It was easier for me to cut the brown connector in the engine bay, extend that wire, and connect it to the one under the dash, rather than cutting both ends and having to reach under the dash to crimp a wire to extend it. You might be able to get away with using male/female spade connectors, but I'm not sure on that one. This is the way that Denny told me to do it (actually he did cut and crimped the wire in the engine bay for me)

Try going down to your local Acura dealer to see if they have one. If you're lucky, you'll be able to get one there. If not, have them do a dealer search on it. The part number is 08V31-ST7-20051. I got mine from board member len over at Baranco Acura, but I'm not sure if they still carry them. Try calling 1(800)-741-2557 and ask for Bert, he's a fellow H-T member who works at Gettel Acura in Sarasota Florida.

If you're talking about acuraautomotiveparts.org, I emailed them back in June asking about the switch harness and the foglight harness, but not the switch itself. I got this response:

Sorry, my car was in the shop for the past 4 months getting the front end installed, so I really couldn't start on it until I got it back last week

this still makes no sense. why not just run longer wire straight into the fuse / relay location. theres no way im losing cruise control just to hvae a connector under there instead of straight wire. makes 0 sense!

Who said anything about losing cruise control? Perhaps you're mistaken with the JDM foglight switch, which can use the OEM cruise control button harness? The brown connector found under the hood and under the dash is there from the factory, and is only used if you have an OEM foglight kit installed.

This has nothing to do with cruise control, the purpose of the brown connector/blue wire is to output power from the relay directly to the foglights. Are we on the same page now?

i hate to bring this post back from the dead, but at least i searched b4 posting a new topic. anyway, just curious as to if i can simply wire the fog lights to a regular rocker switch so it is completely independent from the high beams/low beams being on? would i still need harnesses, relays, etc.?

Thanks B U N M A N G O!!!

I could never do this right without this writeup...

I will be using this tommorrow to install my jdm fogs with the US switch...It's weird because I got mine on ebay from Japan and it came with fogs, relay, and switch. Now, the switch I got is the one that goes right by the e-brake...Is that location of the switch JDM or USDM?

I will post if this works tommorrow....
