Once again.....tuning is everything!! (long)
Well I <u>finally</u> got my car properly dyno tuned on Friday - and what a difference it made!
I have been waiting patiently for things to evolve here in Vancouver. The situation was this....Historically there was were two Dynojets in town - one at a hot rod shop waaaaay outside town that didn't work on imports much and another "above ground" type that was at a shop that had a reputation for high readings and inconsistent results. The latter one was often being serviced - or did not have a properly working wideband 02 sensor to tune with or the printer was broken or it didn't correct for atmospheric conditions...blah blah blah - you get the picture.
Recently - another shop, Kinetic Motorsports just purchased a brand new Dyno Dynamics Dynanometer. This shop is run by well known VW/Audi tuners and specialize in turbo buildups and custom exhaust systems. But they were unfamiliar with Hondata. http://www.dyno.com.au/home.htm
Vancouver has a lot of great shops that can wrench on your car but precious few that make a business of EFI tuning. I have known Wayne at Garage 5 for about 4 years now. He got into Hondata pretty much as soon as it came out - but didn't have a dyno at his facility to tune on. As it is in many cities - many of the shops in town here compete with each other - so it is rare to get a dyno tune from someone who doesn't work at the particular shop with the dyno. I got him to install the Hondata Stage 2 setup on my car and we had it roughly tuned - so it idled well and stayed close to the ideal A/F readings by tuning on the street- so I could use it at the track without blowing my motor up. We did that early this year and the car felt strong - idled well and had lots of torque.
I was fine with the "street tune" method because the car felt more powerful with the Hondata setup than with the chipped Mugen ECU I was using earlier. So I was happy - but I knew ultimately I would need a full dyno tune.....because I still had an ongoing mild pinging problem under low rpm conditions that was annoying me...
Recently I heard that the Wayne at Garage 5 had done some tuning at Kinetic Motorsports dyno facility for another customer. This was very encouraging to me to hear. I had my custom exhaust done at Kinetic and was very happy with both the workmanship and professionalism there. I was also very happy with my previous experiences with Wayne at his shop.
My previous best dyno on a Dynojet was 195ish using Toda B cams, forged internals, 310cc injectors etc etc. I knew the Dynojet numbers were a bit high - but I also knew they were pretty close to actual - as a S2000 with an intake did 199 whp the same day I dyno'ed my car and I knew that S2ks dyno at around 200 whp - so my numbers were within what was considered "reasonable".
Well they worked on my car the whole damn day. They did 30 pulls on the car and ended up with a best pull of 211.8 whp and 144 ft/lbs of torque.<edit>This is on a car that baselined at 184 whp when they started!! I guess I had the timing retarded a bit too much to deal with a pinging problem I had been experiencing at low rpm.
Well the car that felt good before - FEELS AWESOME now. I can't believe the difference in the powerband - it's like I added a blower or something. Kudos to Shawn (Kinetic Motorsport) and Wayne (Garage Five) - you guys did an amazing job and far exceeded what I thought I would get!!!
I will have to scan the dyno sheets today or tomorrow and post them for those who are interested. I will also post A/F and my cam gear settings etc.
Coles notes: Toda B high comp motor - dyno's 210 whp and 144 ft/lbs tq = one happy customer

always.
tuning a stock motor will help... but with a modded beast (like yours ) tuning helps even more and will help the life of the car.

Man you must be very happy driving your car now after being tuned. Those are incredible numbers! 145lbs of torque in an ITR, who wouldn't want to have that.

Endyn 81.5mm 12.5:1 CR <edit> Rollerwave pistons/Eagle rods/stock crank
Spoon FW/clutch

I still dont understand why people dont know the importence of tuning, people always do these $5k rebuilds of their engine, but dont set enough money to get it tuned.
or go to a good tuner.
then they complain about the price of tuning, even though all the other **** they did, doesnt even matter in comparison to get it tuned really good.
maybe someday people will learn

Amen.
My words exactly. Actually, it would have taken me 5x as many words to say that.

Re: Once again.....tuning is everything!! (B2FiNiTY)
and even if you still have a big wallet, getting your car tuned on the dyno so you can see where you have weaknesses in your setup. that way you can know what you are being limited by. or where in the power band you need improvement.
like I remember bpr talking about maybe getting his head ported. he can now look at his dyno.
if his tq curve flattens out around 7.7-8.1k rpm then its prolly his head that is lacking.
his header/cams/intake manifold/TB can flow enough air, its prolly his head that is restricting some air flow

I'm in a similar boat (but not such a modified car). I no of no place near here that can tune my car...</TD></TR></TABLE>
Take a trip to Houston and let st00pid tune for you.

i found this to be true went i ran my set up for a while with out tunning , i felt great TQ difference from stock compare to the new set up . but once they tune , the motor became alive . huge difference

I had Garage 5 street tuned the Hondata stage 2 for my car, I was pretty happy with how the car drive. May be I should drive 1000+km to Vancouver and get Garage 5 tune it on dyno for me next spring.

yeah I'll say those are awesome gains on a setup that you thought was already great! incredible! this makes me so mad I havent gone Hondata yet or tuned it on a dyno.
Congrats BPR, truly awesome.. cant wait to see the data but your write-up was good enough!

Re: Once again.....tuning is everything!! (owen_the_soyboy)
Congratulations Johnathan!
I also got my hondata tuned by Wayne at Garage 5...we used the 'inconsistent dyno' that you were talking about, but my numbers were really bad (only 180 whp with jun 3 cams, jun valvetrain, jun header, spoon headgasket, comptech intake and spoon n1)
Would you please let me know what Wayne did differently with the tuning this time(eg advanced timing, cam gears, fuel?) compared to last time? Also, approximately how much did it cost you?...thx

30 pulls sounds like it cost $$$
