FibreGlass Work
How exaclt is fibreglass matting and resin used? I had a rust spot on my car about 6 inches by 4 inches so Im thinking of picking up a bottle of resin and some matting. What do I do? Really have no idea where to start and my search isnt working.
Thanks

Re: FibreGlass Work (RiceRacist)
Not to many people use it nowadays for simple fixes now that Bondo is more stable redily avalible. It is actually fairly simple. Follow these steps to a 'T' if you want it to come out right. Here is what you do.
Assess how much work you have to do. Then go and buy sheets that will cover 1"-3" past the edges of the hole you want filled. Then cut them to shape over the area. Then take a grinder/sandpaper whatever and take out all of the rust. 100% of it. Dont cut corners or it will come back and bite you in the *** in a few months.
Then get the resin and place it in a pan, like a 2" deep baking pan or so. Read the instructions on how much resin to hardener that you need. Whatever it says on the bottle of resin you need of resin place that in the pan. Then with the hardener drizzle it over the top of the resin so that it is totally coated in a thin clear layer. Now take a paint brush and mix it up throughly. Make sure you do it quickly though you dont want it to get all super tacky on you and then you are out of the resin.
So now you have the resin, and matte ready to go. Take the mat and the brush with a little bit of resin on it and place the matte over the work area. Make sure that the area you are attaching is sanded down to the bare metal or the paint is off the fiberglass if you are going over other fiberglass. Ok you have the matte down now take the brush with the bit of resin on it and work from the inside out and paste it down. Then make sure the matte is stuck in the right place and with a razorblade trim the excess edges when it is still wet. Now if you can do the same to the other side of the work area if there is room. If not then do another layer of resin. Then another layer of matte and resin on top of that. Then wait for it to dry.
Then look at the work surface. Make sure everthing is looking good. Then with a resperator, long coveralls, and a hat cover your body and get prepared to sand it flat. Sand it to the desired shape you need it. Wait 10 min before you take off your mask and go outside before you do that and shake like crazy. You need to make sure your clothes are fiberglass free, and that the airborn glass has settled.
Clean the work surface with cleaner and check it out. Fill areas with little bits of matte and resin as needed and sand as needed.
That should be it. That is what I have always done and other than the first time with the resin hardening too soon I never had a problem.

Re: FibreGlass Work (crxforum)
wow, thanks man coverred everything possible I think. So after I get the resin all mixed up and the mat cut I just place the mat over the surface and put a little fibreglass on it to make it stick? How many layers til it would be fairly strong? How long does a fairly thin layer take to dry?
Thanks again,
Kevin

You should do about 2 layers atleast, just to be safe. The feberglass is really strong when it dries. It should take anywhere between 10 and 30 min to dry depending on how much hardener you use and the temperature it is outside. But as you know in every case it is different. You should check out the instructions in the bottle before you do anything and make sure you have all of your supplies ready to go before hand because you dont want your resin drying on you when you are looking for a paintbrush you dont mind using.

Re: FibreGlass Work (RiceRacist)
Sorry for the pic but I made it early this morning with paint, just showing out how no I vut out the rust and am left with a nice big sized square hole and an the bottom there is nothing to put the mat against, thats my only problem. How would I get the fibreglass to stay in a good shape on the bottom and how would I get it to make the nice curve where the fenders flares used to be, kinda stuck

Damn you are a moron. Dont say stuff you have no idea about. Dont worry you are ok. Let me tell you what to do. It is actually really simple.
So now you have this huge hole OH NO! JK. All you have to do it fiberglass it in sections. Like for example look at this pic.
When you are done that sand to shape you want and build with layers of fiberglass untill you fit the shape you want. Then trim the edges and you should be all set to jet.

You just grind it to shape. If it is thin enough take some shears and cut it rough and sand it to shape. Really simple.

ahaha I guess I worded myself wrong I didnt mean at the very bottom I meant just above that how the metal comes out a bit, I guess that question did sound dumb but I meant the the nice bend that starts like 2 inches about the wheel well, forgot what to call it

Re: FibreGlass Work (RiceRacist)
OH I forgot something. You MUST sand each layer after they harden. The resin will push wax to the top and it will not allow more matte and resin to stick if the wax is still there. On some higher quality resin there is no wax but make sure when you do this you do sand and grind it off if it says so on the bottle.
