Shipping a block: INFAMOUS STYLE!!!
I wasn't planning on packing my block like this, but I kinda got worried when I set my block in the "stock" box and picked the box up. It didn't feel like the box could handle the weight. I relized that if I wanted to see the block again in 1 piece I would have to do something. So I went shopping at Home Depot.
Here's what I came up with.
Materials:
24x24x20 cardboard box
2'x 4' 1/2" thick piece of plywood
1"x1" 8' board
12 3" wood screws
2'x8' 1" thick foam board (not sure the technical name, its the pink stuff)
twin size egg shell mattress pad
styrofoam peanuts and/or newspaper
2 30' rolls of 3" heavy duty Scotch Starpping tape
Here's some pics, and instructions!!
I cut the box down to 16" tall, then built an interal frame out of wood to support the box.
step 1
Cut the peice of ply wood in half so that in each side of it will fit nicely into the box. Then cut 6 15" legs out of the 1" by 1" board. Screw 4 of the legs to the 4 outer corners of one of the pieces of plywood with 3" wood screws.
Step 2
For the remaining 2 legs, place the block in the center of the plywood and place the 2 legs through the 2 outer sleeves of the block. Mark the location of the legs.
step 3
Remove the block, then screw the center legs to the plywood...dont forget to pre-drill your screw holes!
Here is how the block will sit in the box with the top peice of plywood attached to the legs.
Step 4
Cut 2 24"x24" pieces of pink foam board. Set one aside for later. Notch the foam out to fit arround the legs, then place it flat against the bottom peice of plywood.
Step 5
Place the bottom section (minus the top picee of plywood) into the box.
Step 6
Cut a piece of 24"x 24" egg shell foam pad, also cut holes to accomidate for the center legs. Place it flat agaist the bottom piece of foam board.
Step 7
Cut 2 pieces of the egg shell foam pad to wrap arrond the center legs. Tape the foam pad to the center legs with the strapping tape.
Step 8
With the remaining foam board, cut 4 pieces for the inner walls of the box. Place the pieces between the 4 outer legs. Place the block into the box. Make 2 rolls out of the egg shell foam and place them on both sides of the block.
Step 9
If you are shipping pistons along with the block, wrap and tape them in the remaining egg shell foam.
Step 10
Place the pistons in the box. 2 in front of the block, 2 in back of the block.
Step 11
Fill the box with Styrofoam peanuts and/or news paper. I used both because I ran out of peanuts.
Step 12
Notch the piece of foam board you set asside to fit arround all 6 legs. Place it into the box.
Step 13
Place the top piece of plywood onto the 6 legs, pre-drill holes, and screw the top down onto the legs.
Step 14
Tape the outer cardboard box up with heavy duty strapping tape.
step 15
Test box.
Step 16
Send to Earl for Benson sleeves.

Man, that's a lot of work. I just wraped the entire block in garbage bags and put it in a box. Then I got 4 cans of foam from home depot (the orange insulating stuff) and filled the entire box. Only downside is that they had to use box cutters to get to the block.

If you ever send a motor, I highly recommend doing something like this. I received a block from UPS, damaged of course. Although it was insured, they wouldn't cover it. Said it was due to improper packaging.
Moral of the story: Cover your *** and dont rely on insurance.
Great post.

Good ****, way to do it. I would love to recieve something shipped from you... fortnox of packages... I have seen people throw some newpaper in a rubbermaid, toss in a block and away it goes... to be recieved by someone in pieces.
Should not have taped it up though... dont they check all the packages before they accept them... that would suck if you have to open it all back up.

Re: Shipping a block: INFAMOUS STYLE!!! (newgsr)
i shipped two complete blocks already , i wish i did it like that lol
i never had a prob tho, i take a big box with about 3 inch's extra roome all around the block (top bottom and sides) and build up that 3 inch's with layers of cardboard. wrap it all up with that shipping tape with the fibers in it ...and its done
on a side note, i live in FL to ship a complete block minus oil pan it cost 92 dollars , the weight with the box was 125lbs (it was heavy to carry lol ..get a dolly )

Nice....very very nice..
I usually used a heavier grade to ship blocks and put plywood on the top, bottom and 2 sides to distribute the weight.
I also find a cheaper alternate, buy a big rubbermaid container. It is cheaper nowadyas than buying a cardboard, office depot charges 12 bucks for 24x24x24 boxes, you can buy a rubbermaid container for $10 or so at walmart.
