y7 -> y8 intake manifold swap complete, now some problems, need help
Well, I finally got my car to start today(y8 intake manifold swap on a y7), had to change over to some new plugs because the old ones got all messed up and she fired up. Now for the problems:
1)Tons of white smoke coming out exhaust pipe, could be because we hooked a hose up wrong at first and got some coolant in the engine and it is just burning off, or any other ideas would be appreciated
2)Check engine light came on, not sure why
3)Rough idle, jumps from about 1k-2k rpm and never levels out
4)Temp gauge shot up to almost 'H' from only a run around the block. When I added the new coolant, I did a 50/50 mix, is there a possiblity that there are air bubbles in the line, or any other ideas on how to fix.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Jump the green connector under the passenger wheel well inside the car and read the check engine light for the code.
Open the radiator cap with engine cold, start the car and let it idle for a little bit bringing the revs up slow. Look for the bubbles coming from the radiator and it will stop eventually. Let the rad fan come on too.

The white smoke your seeing is the coolant burning off. You prolle connected the wrong hose and some coolant got sucked into the engine and is burning off. Let it run till no more smoke comes out.
Rough idle is prolle what one of the other member mentioned. Swap MAP and TPS if thats not it. You have a vaccum leak somewhere.
For your engine overheating--make sure you have the right coolant lines attached to proper placing.
I just went through everything you just went though this week. I just got done install a d16y8 and had all those problems.

As for the coolant lines, I have one running from underneath the manifold into one nipple on the TB and then from the other nipple on the TB to the smaller nipple on the coolant nipple on the block. I think that is it.

This morning I went out and swapped the tps and map connections around and reset my ecu. I started the car and the idle was smoother, but then I couldn't rev it up past 3k's rpms without it bogging. Any ideas?

Are you hearing any vacuum leaks?? When you swapped you map and tps sensor, did you get a check engine light when you swapped them?? I went through the exact same thing you are talking about, even after I swapped the tps and map sensors, turned out be the holes on the 99-00 intake manifold for air injection right above the fuel injectors.

Are you using the right IACV. The y7 has a three wire and the y8 has a two. Hopefully you got an automatic y8 because it is three wire. If the manifold was off a car w/ cruise control there is a air hole on the back/driver side of the manifold. plug it. Make sure there isn't any other vacuum leaks. I just did the swap w/ no cel or problems. Good luck.

I am using my y7 TB on the y8 manifold and using the TB cable bracket from the y8 so that the IACV is on the TB still and the holes on the y8 intake manifold are plugged where the IAC was. The intake manifold has air injection, but all holes were plugged. There was no check engine light that came on when I swapped the sensors.

Re: (Pfieffdog)
Give your car some throttle by hand turning the throttle rotor by hand. If you do this, and your car bogs greatly, you had the tps and map correct the first time. Again I will ask you if you are hearing any vacuum leaks too, because that seems to be the issue at this point.

Make sure the wires to the distributor is in correct sequence or in proper connection on the dizzy cap.

If nothing works that everyone has mentioned I would check the holes that were plugged from the previous iacv and check to see if you have all the hoses connected correctly.

I gave it some throttle from under the hood and it still bogged out at 2500-3000 rpms. I changed them back to the other way and reset the ecu and the car starts but then bumps back and forth from 1k-2k rpms. I am assuming I have a vacuum leak, but I am going outside to take some pictures now because I want to make sure that the hoses are hooked up correctly before I move on. I'll post pics in a few

Re: (Pfieffdog)
Thats exactly how I have it done. Looks good to me..... now to find the problem, honestly I think you may have had the tps and map right the first time, only because of the bogging you are getting... but unfortunately what you first talked about in this topic indicates otherwise..

I just pulled out one of the brand new plugs that I put in yesterday and it is pretty black. Also, there is some coolant shooting out the exhaust tip, which I think is left over from when the hoses were hooked up incorrectly, but I could be wrong

My car did the same thing. I put in new plugs and they were black when i pulled it after the first start and ran for like 5 mins. I have hella white smoke coming out of the exhasut. I thought it was going catch fire. But let if run till the smoke clears. It'll take a while before it all burns out.
What i think you did was connect one of the vaccum hoses into a coolant line and when you started it- it suked some of the coolant into the engine. When you took out your plugs. Did it have a watery residue on the plugs? Mines did, which was from the coolant. Thats where all the white smoke came from.
For the rough idling. Again make sure your plugs are in the prop squence on the distributor cap. I tried driving mine in the wrong order and couldnt get it to drive w/o dying out. And it was idling rough as hell too.
Try this and let me know what happens net......
