Default HID install for JDM H4H *with pics!*

Here's the update as of 8/1/03 11:00pm! I just got my HIDs today, and 3 hrs. later they were in my car. It took a little bit of improvising, since I have never done this before, but it was pretty much the same as the DA version I posted already, but this is just my version using the J-spec EG headlights. To go thru all the pics I took, here's the link index: http://www.turntableteknicianz...D.htm I will post the basic install pics.

*SORRY FOR THE RED X'S...CLICK ON THE LINK ABOVE FOR THE PIC VERSION*

Okay, start off with the bulbs, this will take the most time. Grind off the 3 tabs, and grind a little round slit at 3 o clock looking from the back of the bulb. This will align the bulb and don't worry about the bulb falling thru the housing cause the D2R/S plug will hold it from falling in. Note that the lil rod on the bulb aligns on the bottom if you are disoriented.

If you wanna be smart, utilize the bulb seals. If you wanna be even smarter, make up something that will totally seal the rubber back up. Anyways, you gotta cut a slit in the rubber to shove the plug thru it.

This is the difference between the D2R bulb and the D2S. The D2S don't have that light blocking line on the bulb.

I took a paperclip and somewhat fabricated a replica of the regular bulb clip, but be careful cause these are weak. Try using something thicker. This is to hold the bulb from falling back out. I also bent the back piece in a V shape cause it helps put pressure back on the bulb when you clip it in, and note that you have to unscrew the original clip just far enough to wiggle the clip out, then put in the paperclip the same way you took the other one out. Not rocket science!

Here's how it looks when its in.

Still mounts the same as the original clip.

Do yourself a favor and do it right. Get some shrink tubing, and solder. It will never come apart by accident unless your solder job sucked (knock on wood). Note the lil black clip to the right of the ballast. It's a standard H4 or sealed beam harness sold at all auto parts stores. I soldered this harness directly to the ballasts wires so the kit will be plug and play. I used some funky male-to-male brass connectors to plug into it, which will mate into the car's factory plug.

I told you its all about Matsushita!

Here it is back in the car. I might try to find a way to seal that rubber back up. I am not satisfied with it. I hurried to get it installed for everyone to see, but I am sure it'll be fine. I used electrical tape (red) to cover up the lil H4 harness I bought, so it'll secure the plugs, and then I zip tied the 2 plugs faced-to-face so they don't shake loose. McCulloch recommends doing this.

Don't laugh at my zip tie obsession. This is probably just gonna be temporary until I find the right materials to mount it up. Like I said, I wanted to show everyone my version with the TL HIDs.

Yes they are JDM.

NOW FOR WHAT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, AND YES ESPECIALLY ILL_TAKE_ONE. I THINK YOU WILL BE SATISFIED WITH THIS BEAM PATTERN. I AM... ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS COMPARED TO MY FRIENDS AFTERMARKET HID KIT ON HIS S14 (H1 KIT). I NOTICED A BIG *** DIFFERENCE. ENJOY!!!

Lots of flare but what can you do huh?

Some reasons why I think this setup is better than using any aftermarket HID kit

1. D2R bulb width is almost identical to that of the H4H so it won't shake around in the socket

2. The filament placement in the bulb is identical so it still has practically the same beam pattern and placement (note: because of the large HID plug, when you install it, it sits back like 1/8th of an inch further than the stock H4H bulb depending on the brand of HIDs)

3. D2R/D2S bulbs are OEM, so very easy to find at any dealer or on ebay =-)

4. Because they are OEM, they are not brand/model specific, so prices are lower and you don't have to only buy that brand

5. Factory kits have DOT approval #s for the bulbs, not just the ballasts (maybe you can convince a cop its legal with that)

6. A truly OEM kit has not been taken apart and modified, so it should have almost no problems at all

7. Simply, it just fits better than any other bulb size in the H4H housing

Ok, if you have the JDM headlights then you know that there is no glare-shield inside the housing, so there would be no distinct cut-off point, and for sure it won't look anything like projectors cut-off line, but from what this pic shows (and sorry I can't take more pics cause I jacked these from another thread), you obviously don't see the beam on the sidewalk, just on the grass, so its not too high, and its not shining up on the houses or the car up ahead. It's on the floor, and this pic is from a 90-93 Integra with JDM headlamps. Same type of lens as ours, and same bulbs, so I expect the beam to look similar. This is a really nice beam for a ghetto-fab job! There's nothing better we can do for the JDM headlamps as far as HIDs go. Agree? Hopefully when I get my kit, I can copy something similar to this, and take pics of my version, and I will take pics of all the beams on walls, and on clean roads so we can check for hot spots and all, and whatever else. I still think this is the best fitment for the H4H so far.

Could i see picts of the lenses? Are they fluted or not?

Also, the pict with the beam pattern on the ground confuses me. Looks like there's almost 4 lamps shining on the ground (look towards the bottom of the pict). I know there isnt, but it just doesn't look right. Seems like the spread isnt that wide either...

Props if there's no glare i guess...
I'd just like to see more picts head on, of the lamps, and various other picts (wall cuttoff).
Thanks

perhaps a caspers cut off shield could be adapted.

This might be a newbie HID question, but will this work on 96-00 Civic's? Im pretty sure my car uses an Dual filament bulb - H4. So if we do this crossover (which I like very much) can we keep the brights? or will this lose them?

Thanks - Fred

brights are lost buddy, and this thread is in regard to anyone who uses the JDM bulb style H4H, not H4... The whole thing about this, is that this bulb type wasn't used very long, so there is practically no after-market HID kit for us people with H4H housings.

The pic of the lighting on the ground is from the JDM one piece 90-93 DA integra headlamp, which is "fluted" as U would say, or in laments terms, not euro-clear style. HIDs weren't meant for our headlights, but I know a lot of people who want them over their stock bulbs.

And yeah I suppose we could take out the cut-off shield from the US spec headlamp and install it into the JDM headlamp, but I dont like that. THe shield makes the light reflect in somewhat of a Wu-Tang symbol on the floor, hehe.

the shield in a us spec head lamp isn;t meant for cut off. it just diffuses the light. you could adapt a soda can into a cut off shield like mtk komander did.

hid's are not dual filament bulbs. in kits that add high beams all that is done it the bulb is moved back and more light is let through the head lamp. if you need help on an hid retrofit for an ek hit me up.

Sounds like a dope idea, but I think the only problem with light reflecting upwards comes from the bottom of the housing, so maybe just paint the bottom of the light black, or flat grey (less noticeable) to reduce the beaming upwards. When I rigged the McCulloch H4 HID kit to the H4H housings before I just aimed the headlamps all the way down, and it helped tremendously. You will never be able to get rid of the flare though, cause our housings aren't that "diamond clear" reflector type that all the non-projector HID headlights have. I have tried many things before, but I feel confident I know this is the best thing so far.

you can make it clear.... if u can find a cheap set of angel eyes, or other headlights that have the CLEAR glass.... just remove the 'not so clear' glass pieces and put on the clear ones from the angel eyes headlights... and u can put the stock ones on the angel eyes and try to resell... im sure someone will go for em....

Dude, I invented that idea. I did it first from what I recall, and I should take a pic of those things now, the silicon won't hold it that well, cause the lens was bigger than the stock housings, and plus U gotta aim them so much up, that you stretch the clear lens off of the housings, causing the silicon to stretch like a spider-web. Like I said, I thought of everything, and I got tired of water leaking in my headlight too.

Wu-Tang beam pattern

Here is the new remedy for that. SOmeone finally designed a euro-clear headlight with a totally clear lens. I think they used the JDM headlight as the mold cause it has a city light socket in it too. http://www.procarparts.com

Anyways, this isn't about making the lens clear, this is about finding some HIDs for the H4H bulb housings!!!!!!!

Hmmm, yeah thats a nasty pattern...

Did you try going around the headlamps with silicone to reseal them? it works wonders!
