Re: How did you get into AutoX? (jin_)
When I was 7 years old or so, I saw an autocross event going on and thought "this looks like fun... but some of these people are really bad. I bet I could beat them"
A friend of my sister's and a friend of my brother's both used to autocross... they used to run the same class, so I'd hear stories from both parties about how one beat the other.
Got my first car, went out to an event about a year later.

When I bought my ITR, I had to sign a contract that said that I would autocross it or they would come and take it away from me
...I had no choice.

I took my integra to university. My first year I saw a bunch o' crazy folks with the cars parked around a booth on clubs day but I thought is was like a SHO KAA club since only the nicest cars in the club were brought out to attract passers by.
Second year I walked by the same booth and joined the club. Been autocrossing when $$ and time allowed since then. Oddly enough, the bump-stop ridin', 20" inch mag rollin' BMW hasn't made it out to any events.

I was going to a car show in Harrisburg when I saw these guys running through cones in a parking lot in Centerville. I stopped by and decided to try it: 17" wheels, body kit and all.
Took 1st or 2nd place in the open class Right there I got hooked and never went to that car show

In college, I bought an 88 CRX Si used from this couple who had to get rid of it due to an incoming baby. A couple years later I posted to the "HONDA-L" mailing list (boy, I'm really dating myself now) about a squeaky cargo area. The lone response was something like this:
"Hey, did you buy that car from a young couple expecting their first child? If so, this is Arthur, and that was my Wife's car..." He went on not to describe a fix, but to tell me that CRXs were very good at something called "autocrossing," and that the following weekend, an autocross school was going to be held. I took the bait.
I knew I wanted to be a Good Driver just because I had it in my head that it was some kind of noble thing to study. So I bought books and practiced technique (slowly) and started reading the Motorsports parts of magazines like Road and Track for the first time. Then in 1996 I went to Bondurant school. And it was all downhill from there.

I was driving my brothers car at the time(Civic hatch), when I was 15 with my mom(driver's permit), and some guy ran up to me from the car behind me at a stop light with a web address. I went to it, which ended up being the local autocross club. So when I turned 16, I raced.
Cone racing
Now I'm punkin all the old guys that have been driving the same car as I've been alive

1996: Saw an article in the local paper about Tarheel SCC and this thing they do called "autocross". "Sounds cool, I should do that sometime." Article goes on to say the next event just happened to be 300 yards down the street from my apartment. Next weekend. How convenient.
It's been a financial nightmare ever since. I have 2 cars with roll bars/cages. More wheels than pairs of underwear. Currently looking for a tow vehicle. Diesel. All thanks to that damn article.

well, my dad has been autoXing for some time...in fact I have pictures of him at the first nationals. he was one of the founding members of the gateway autoX club which the SCCA eventually gave sanctioning to for the St. Louis region. This was all before I was born, so I guess you can say that it's in my blood.
my dad brought me to my first event 4 years ago, I ran his ESP Cobra for my first 2 years, now I'm campaigning my STS integra

Re: (carl_aka_carlos)
Honda-Tech is at fault for my autocrossing... Over two years ago I came here looking for information on making my integra a better car for the street. I previously knew about autocrossing, but put it off in the "one day I'll do it....". Well after spending some time here I finally decided to go ahead with autocrossing...and it's gotten so bad I'm building up an EP class money-pit monster and regularly competing with my Toyota Tacoma in STF class - Thanks a lot Honda Tech!

I have been around racing all my life. My dad and uncle use to race all sorts of cars and types of racing when I was really young (Hillclimbs, autocross, Midgets, Formual V's, Karts etc.) My dad eventually decided on dirt tracking, Micro Midgets. I started racing Quarter Midgets at 14 and then rna some Micros and karts now and them later. I moved to DC area and was introduced to autocrossing by a guy doing some work on my CRX.

Re: (ITACivic)
years ago (1992) in college I did an internship in Oak Ridge TN. Well, the local club (East. Tenn Region SCCA) had a display at the local mall (a Porsche 911 with cool stickers and "bald" tires) and it looked cool. I had a "hot" car ('78 Toyota Celica) so I figured I'd go out and show these folks how to drive. I gave it a shot, got my butt kicked (novice class was me in last, a Porsche 944 in 2nd and a Toyota Paseo in first). I don't know what was worse, losing to a Paseo or one of the local crazies in a stock VW Beetle (it *may* have been Robert Carpenter). I've been hooked ever sice (though not really serious until more recently).

I grew up around it, got burned out on it, and then got back going on it when I ran out of money for road racing.

I just took my G/F out for the first time yesterday. She cut about 13 seconds off of her first time, consistantly improving each run and ended up beating 23 people in PAX. I think I got her hooked now... although that will only end up costing ME more money.
Anyway, I'm thrilled to have her out there with me.

My father was always into racing... autocross... formula fords... etc for 40 years. I used to go to autocrosses with him when I was 13-14. Once I got my license we'd talk cars and performance driving. Sadly, I did not drive my first event until 1 year after he died. Finally, One of my fellow street maniacs said he was going to an event and asked me if I wanted to go... said yes... That was march 2001. About 80 events later here I am, addicted.

my civic broke down after one of the meets that i had. And at that meet i met a couple guys from team sdx racing. They helped me fix my car and do a MPFI swap on my car, they told me to check out some of the events, and thats when i started losing money, but its worth it

Re: How did you get into AutoX? (jin_)
I got into autocrossing last year. I was a junior in highschool, and one of my friends I met in class was an instructor for "auto crossing". I only cared about drag racing, and I was all, "why would anybody drive around cones? if this kid is an instructor, it can't be very hard, so I'll go out there and spank everyone." Well, my friend was a very good instructor, and I was schooled, but got hooked. Lots of nice people and nice cars. I'm glad I found auto-x. It's kept me from racing on the streets ^_^

To answer the topic, it may be hard to believe but I first heard of autox was when I saw it on TV back in Toronto. They had these pro solo type events at an old airport and televised the events on local cable.

Came onto honda-tech and saw the Road Racing/Autocross link and asked myself "What is autocross". Looked through the threads and got more information on it and made a post asking for any regional events in my area. So actually this website got me into autocrossing.
