Lexan Replacing Hatch Glass, pics and questions.
Ok, I like what this guy did:
I was wondering how much weight that removed. Im considering doing that but my car is an everyday driver. If the weight removed is resonable, what is involved in removing the glass? Just bust it? LOL Could I use plexy glass instead of lexan? TIA

i drove around like that for 3 years with my CRX. I really didnt have anything in the back so it didnt matter if it leaked a little. And I didnt use the stock Hatch either. I made my own frame screwed on to the body and the lexan was riveted. yes its permanent and yes its not for everyone. it lasted pretty long. even through the hot summers and the rainy winters(at least what we have here in socal). never got sweated by the cops either. they were more concerned that the rear didnt have interior.
Weight savings. i would guess 65lbs. maybe less. the lexan and the aluminum frame I built only weighed less than 6lbs.
Sound louder inside.. yes. Leaked at times.. yes.

trust me, don't use plexi, go with the little more expensive lexxan, you'll understand once you clean it and once you write on it at the track, it'll never wipe off of plexi without scratching, plus, if you have some stupid immature enemies, they won't beable to throw rocks through them>

I did that to my racecar but kept the metal frame so I have a functional hatch still. It took 48 lbs out of the rear deak and cut it down to a total of 8 lbs with the stock frame and the Lexan. Mine is a track only car I I don't know how it will last.
I couldn't get either glass out of the frame so I finally wrapped the whole thing in an old blanket and smashed the glass with a hammer. Once I got most of the glass off the frame, I rolled up the carpet and threw it away full of all the broken glass.

Has anyone done a lexan sunroof plug?
I was just watching the MTV True Life: I'm a Streetracer...and I noticed that on Greg's CRX he had his sunroof plugged with lexan (but then it was RHD, so it could have been a glasstop...?)
I'm thinking about doing this, but the only thing is that it needs to be VERY secure and watertight.
What do you guys think?
Alex

mine i think is like a 1/4 of an inch and yes you can use screws instead of rivets....
no you dont have to have a pro install it you can do it yourself just dont be in a rush and dont do it half ***.........

is lexan easy to cut? I know lots of ice and a circular saw do wonders on 1/2" plexiglass, is it pretty much the same? And its easily molded right? so if i weer to cut the lexan into the shape of a window it would flex buy itself and wouldn't require much modification besides being cut to the size of the window

I dont remember their name but there is a company that does make all of the rear glass and even the driver and passenger side windows (working) out of Lexan.

I wouldn't just screw into the metal. You should rivet a threaded insert into what you are going to mount it on (such as a "jack nut threaded insert"). You can then use small bolts to secure the lexan with, if you want it to be removeable. It takes a fair bit of time to remove, even with an electric screwdriver, so it's not really something that you'd want to do by hand..
You'll also need a place for the lexan to rest on. On our car, we welded in a lip that was recessed slightly, so the lexan would be mostly flush with the roof. We then used paintable silicon caulk to weather seal up that lip nice and tight (on the underside, otherwise it might interfere with the lexan piece) You can kind of see what we did in these pictures here:

After that, it was just a matter of trimming the lexan to fit well, painting it, and we took a little rubber squish weather seal and adhered it to the lexan so that when it was screwed down, it would be nice and sealed, though the seal does add a little to the distortion of the lexan.

when you rivet the glass down, why wouldnt you use window glue or sealer, so it wouldnt leak? common sense? maybe i missed something.

http://www.optauto.com/webstore/prod...t=854&last=854 another option if you want a factory look or dont have the knowledge or the tools to cut the lexan.
