Do It Yourself - Exhaust Mod / Repair (*56K Warning Lots-o-Pics*)
Here's the story: I just got my ZC swap running very well, I had never registered my car since I bought it and decided today was the time to do so. After I got my CRX all legal down at the DMV I realized that I would soon be pulled over for noise, I have DC 4-1 header going to a very high flow cat then to what's left of my OEM cat back system. Here's what the problem was...
I decided my best path for repair was to let the second tip go and repair over it and fix the two very large holes. I went around the house and gathered some supplies.
Soon I was done with my inside work and had enough supplies to go out to the garage...
I started working on restoring the neck for the salvagable tip, I'm not sure where the second neck ever went.
Neck covered with pop cans and duct tape, now it's time to patch the MIA second tip:
Finally it was time to repair the two large holes, this took the longest time and I even had to go back and get more cans.
Now an hour and a half later the final product:
--And before you say "It's going to melt wahhhh wahhhh " know that I check my muffler when I left my car today and it wasn't nearly hot enough to melt anything. Also this just has to get me through this month so I can drive it around a little bit before I put it away for winter.

I need a one month muffler, I'm saving for another swap right now so a muffler isn't very high on my list. I was suprised it actually quieted it down a lot.

man i would be really careful. how hot does duct tape need to get to burn? Thats a great idea but if your car catches on fire that is a problem

Ok does anyone with any expierence with this see any concerns? The muffler is very far back and I doubt it sees that much heat especially with it being 33 degrees outside. Personally, I kind of hope it melts or something, then maybe my parents would feel sorry enough for me to buy me a nice cat-back for Christmas.

Soup cans would work well too - they're a thicker steel, rather than the aluminized steel you used, but they're not a straight-through design like the aluminum you used - they got "baffles"...get fancy and solder them on!

This should be one of those threads that you save.. "archive" or some ****. Very informative, it will help plenty of newcomers. Good work!

Duct tape cures all! I actually duct taped two pipes on my exhaust together since the clamps weren't holding it. It was right after the cat almost so it was very hot. The duct tape would burn and smell like solder. It lasted about a week before it burned off and the pipe came off. I dragged the pipe 30 some miles and that killed it. I now run no exhaust pipe at all, and it hurts my ears. My HKS Sport comes Friday though.
My friend ghetto rigged a generic DTM tip to his stock VW exhaust with duct tape. When on the muffler it's not hot enough to burn the tape but it does melt. And nothing you can do is going to get that duct tape off once it's melted onto whatever you put it on. So it should hold up pretty well.

Grandpa suggests that you go to auto parts and buy a CHEAP Cherry Bomb muffler to replace that firetrap setup you now have. Great idea and there is a product made by Thermo Tec that would completely surround the existing muffler shell. Your big problem is the missing pipe part of this deal.
