ATTN: CTR pulley owners!!
hello i am currently rebuilding my ls/vtec, due to a unestablished bearing problem...the bearing was not spun, the motor just started to devolop a slight rod knock one random day.... anyway im getting alot of responses like "thats waht u get for runnin a ctr pulley"....i am not a professional bearing problem solver sooo i thought id post up these pix....#4 rod bearing, it also cracked the crank
i had the entire rotating assembly balanced, everything was torqed to spec....help please

did all the bearings look like that or just that one? also what bearings did you use? how many miles where on the motor, and was all the clearances checked?
looks like some serious over heating. ive never seen the bearing surface turn black like that. i think the non dampening pulley usually has more affect on the oil pump. was it tuned/was you dentonating any?

no just this bearing looked like this
Acl standard bearings
2000 miles on the motor
all bearing clearances were calculated and plasti gauged
yes motor was dyno tuned, made 193/128

what were the clearances? what flywheel was you running? was you running a new oil pump, since thats the furthest away from the pump.

damn, sounds like you did everything right. doesnt make any sense. maybe one of the more knowing engine builders on here can shed some light.
like i said ive heard of those pulleys shattering oil pumps but not that.

just for clarification is this the ctr N1 pulley? if so you must understand that this pulley doesn't not have any type of dampener built in like all the stock pulleys. you will see 1st-3rd order harmonics . If your spinning at its resonance frequency say goodbye to your hard earned money on this build, this will destroy your engine with in no time.
Even if the rotating assembly was balanced...which means the machine shop spins the assembly pretty damn slow not even over 100rpms to balance it. this still will not help, its only small insurance.
I bet your crank cracked then caused the knock/bearing to go. just use a stock pulley

Before you go to far with the pulley, what do the 4 and 5 main bearings look like?
Also, the pulley typically causes you to have a oil pump failure. I would check the pump to see if it is in working order.

Re: (00b18b)
looks like oil starvation. if the crank pulley was the culprit the main bearing by the pulley would most likely be messed up. this has been discussed a hundred times and has been proven wrong. the ctr pulley myth crap is getting old.

What is "in no time"? I ask cause I've had an UR racing pulley w/o any dampner on my build for over 3 years, 50K miles, daily driven and rev to 8500 rpm often.

Re: (PirateMcFred)
everybody give up on the pulley myth. the ps belts and what not are wrong as well. the pump wasnt the culprit either. only one bad bearing on the opposite end of the motor says so. when you say it was balanced was everythng balanced? i mean flywheel, clutch, bolts, rods, pistons, rings, pulley, everything. was the shop a reputable shop? i dont know of any competent machine shop balancing anything engine related at 100rpms, if they know hondas they balance at higggghhhhh rpms, just like the engine would see in use. i would guess an oiling problem on that particlular rod, maybe debris, did you check the oil hole alignment when you installed them? if it was slightly off it could cause a major bearing lubrication/cooling problem due to low feed pressure. spend a little extra money and have all the rotating assy. parts blueprinted before the rebuild.
