I would just leave it stock. This is your first track event and you're going to be working on your own limits, not those of your car. I would leave it as is - flush the brake fluid if you haven't done so in the previous six months (and if so you may want to go with a higher-temperature brake fluid, like Motul RBF 600) but otherwise, don't go switching anything out for now. See how it holds up, and how you hold up. If, at the end of the event, you think that one of those things was holding you back from being a lot faster, then worry about replacing it with something better before your next event.

If its your 1st event I would go stock. DOT3 fluid will be fine, I assume you wont be running an insane ammount of laps without pitting. Your factory rotors are good rotors, changing pads down the road is a good idea. Tires arent a bad idea either, but get a feel for your car 1st in stock form.

as laps go i looked at the avarage lap time its between1.30-2 min per lap at like 25 min sessions i think. ok so you guys think i schould go stock then. that would save me some money.

+1 for staying stock. Almost any car can last one day on track Hell, a rental Neon can make it through one day.

Swap the rears to the front (this is a FWD car,, right?) and LOOK at your front pads to be sure you've got plenty of pad material on there. If you're on the edge (and there's a chance you might be down to the metal by the end of the day) just go to autozone and get some cheap-o pads to drive home on in case of emergency. Keep the receipt and return them if you don't use'em.

Stock tires, brakes and fluid (8 mos old) will be fine for your first event. Maybe take a tire pressure gauge and fill them all little high (like maybe 40psi). You can always let air OUT if need be. Harder to put more in without a tank or compressor.

Have Fun.

And if Jeremy C. is instructing, take some extra cash and get him to show you the way. Its money well spent and would get you a lot father on the learning curve than new tires or trick brakes.

You won't have to worry about using up your tires. You probably won't use more than 1/32" of tread for the entire event.

As for the pads, as mentioned above, take a look at their thickness. (On some cars, you can get an idea of the thickness by looking through the spokes of the wheel at the top edge of the pads; on others you have to remove the wheel to see.) Brake pads typically come with about 11 mm thickness of pad material in front, 9 mm in the rear, and you should replace them when they get down to 2 mm for street use (I like to do it at 3-4 mm for track use). Depending on how much track time you get and how hard you use the brakes, you might use as much as 3-5 mm of thickness on the front pads in an event (and you might not). You probably won't use more than 1 mm in the rear.

If you already know what kind of brake pad you want to use next, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get an extra front set, and just bring them with you to the track. Keep an eye on your pad thickness throughout the day, and if and when it looks like it's getting too thin (e.g. 2-4 mm), you can swap the new set on. If you don't know how or don't have the tools you need, other folks at the track will be happy to help you out. (FWIW, I like the Hawk HP Plus for street/track use, but there are other good options too. I get 'em from Tire Rack.) And if you don't use up your pads - you probably won't - you can always use them anyway, sooner or later, so it's not like you're wasting money in any way.

Regarding the brake fluid, check on the sticker on your door jamb to see the month and year when your car was manufactured (which is when the brake fluid was filled). If it was at least a year ago, I would probably flush the brake fluid before your event.

I was at the track with a Rookie 1st time driver in a RSX-S. He faded the front brake pads and had his sessions limited. He sucked as a driver though and was using WAY to long of breaking zones to start but most rookies do this.. .

Bring and extra set of cheapy ones or swap fronts for Hawk HP pluss ($80) I think.. . That'd be my #1 move! Maybe some Cobalt friction GT sports for a bit thicker wallet.

I would recommend a new set of mild front brake pads and keep your oem pads as backups. I did my first track weekend with a set of carbotech bobcats. They did great, but i was in a 127hp civic. I'd suggest a sport/auto-x level pad for the fronts.

Everyone is suggesting sticking with stockers. I think it really depends on how comfortable you are with your car right now as is. I put a lot of wear on the bobcats in my first weekend. I don't know if a set of stock pads would have cut it.

A better set of street tires would be good, but not the best use of money considering how low miles your tires are. So stick with what you've got.

The Carbotech Bobcats are nothing great, and are really not cut out for track use. The stock pads on some performance-oriented cars are actually better than the Bobcats. I'm not familiar enough with the '07 Si to know whether that's true but it sure wouldn't surprise me. I say, stick with the stockers. And keep something suitable for street and track for spares (e.g. Hawk HP+).

I would do your brakes. High temp fluid at least.

You know it is a total waste of time to drive hours to the track....just to have your brakes fade during the first 5 laps.

Are you going to use your brakes way too much? Sure you will. Do you need your brakes to stop so you don't smash into a wall or another car, sure you do. Do you need your brakes for the ride home, yep.

You don't have to jump to some Hawk blues but running some HP+ and good fluid is worth it.

Ford HD fluid is around $6 or something....there is no reason NOT to change stock fluid.

I don't think people learn anything sitting around waiting for their brakes to stop smoking and their fluid to cool down.

The most recent list of brake fluid boiling points and prices is here. The higher the boiling point, the better (the more resistant the fluid is to boiling). Dry boiling point is the boiling point when the fluid is first opened; wet boiling point is after the fluid sits around in the car for a long time and has a chance to absorb moisture.

If your car was built less than a year ago, then the fluid is less than a year old, and its boiling point is probably still reasonably good.

Front brakes are the achilles heel of a stock FWD vehicle. Good fluid and pads will keep you on track longer and able to confidently keep pushing harder and harder as you progress throughout your first few track events. Valvolene SYNpower is good brake fluid for cheap and Hawk HP+ pads will spoil you (stock pads...BLEEEH!) Don't forget you will need to bed in the HP+ pads well (or any other different compound to the stock pads) when swapping from the stock set...

the first time i went to the track at big willow springs i went with stock tires, brakes, and fluid. i was suffering from brake fad all day and all the tread on my (kumho) front tires completely chunked off by the end of the day. but im sure your tires and brakes are better than what i had that day on my 94 civic.

I'd say there's about 5 main topics that people need to know and "realize" when getting into tracking your car.

1st - It's not cheap.. . The famous saying "You gotta pay to play"

2nd - It requires more than stock parts on MOST cars. I don't give a rats *** that most (veteran) guys on this forum say "take it stock" "keep it as stock as possible for your first __X__ amount of time" BLAH BLAH BLAH.. . Your tires will probably hold up for one weekend. Especially your first. If the stock tires on a Mazda Speed 6 Hold, I think yours will too.. .

3rd - Be ready, have your car ready and ready your mind and your body. Don't show up on 2 hours of sleep, hungover, without brakes bled, without backup pads (in my case, I take extra rotors too) and there's more. Just search for threads on here for HPDE or PDX.

4th - don't be cocky, keep an open mind and learn as much as possible from as many instructors at the track as possible.

5th - Have fun! Don't worry about being slow. Concentrate on making slight improvements everytime out. Don't worry about laptimes and instead look towards your instructor for praise and the fellow cars driving with you. They'll let you know you are doing a good or bad job. When you are passing an EVO, M3 or a vette with a driver that has the same amount of experience as you it always feels good when you have the underdog car!

If you don't already have the factory service manual, get one. You can buy one here.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by fg2si!kid &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">oh and the stock tirest hat come on my car are the Michelin pilot mxv4 how do you think they will hold up on thetrack? i also remember seeing pics of a a brand new set of KDW Bfgoodwrench tires with a bunch of chunks of rubber missing after a few laps at a track event iam not to crazy about that happening to me </TD></TR></TABLE>

Your tires shouldn't suddenly disintegrate when you get on the track. But you should keep an eye on them and check them after each session. Very small chunks coming off the tires aren't uncommon and aren't a serious problem. If they're bigger... well, it probably won't happen.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 6spdKEG &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I'd say there's about 5 main topics that people need to know and "realize" when getting into tracking your car.</TD></TR></TABLE>

6th - You will have a lot to absorb during your first track event, and this will be frustrating at times. In particular, your first few laps out on the track, you will say to yourself, "I have no idea where I'm going. WTF did I get into?" Don't worry; by the end of the first day, you will have the track layout memorized. Other things will fall into place too. Everyone started out the first time, and most events will put you into a run group with other newbies and you'll all be feeling the same way. By the end of the event, you'll be ready to sign up for more.

Everyone on here has had good info and suggestions.... I actually would suggest flushing your brake fluid and put some good stuff in there ( Motul or ATE Super Blue) AND buy a set of better tires.....

After the better part of 10 years @ Discount Tire Co. I can honestly say that the Michelin tires that come stock on the 06+Si SUCK....... The Pilot Exalto ( opt. summer tire) aren't bad, but the HX MXM4 are garbage...... I had them as OE tires on my 02 TL type S and they gave up grip way too easily. I also had experience with them on an RSX i drove for a little bit....same story...... It is way too much of an all season tire for a car with a sporting nature.

By going with a good set of tires like the Azenis, not only will the car handle better, but the stock brakes will be able function at a higher level as well. Tires are a huge factor in how well a set of brakes can work......the best pads in the world won't help if yours tires don't grip for ****.....

other than that....run it just like it is...with decent tires and brake fluid you should be able to enjoy a great day at the track

Good choice!

I think for best results, go ahead and put the HP + pads on before you get to the track so you can learn about your car's new handeling characteristics. Bed them in and get use to them on the streets first before you try and push your car to the limits on the track.. . Practice heal-toe a bit and some thresh-hold braking on a open road.

Also, use tire chalk to watch roll over and adjust tire pressures accordingly. Adjust them when they are hot. Your instructor should be able to help you out with this one.
