Default READ THIS!! - Cam Wear

I've posted about this before (3 years ago https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=918465) re new SL and later oils (lower zinc/phosphorus forumuations) and cam wear. Just shows how prophetic I am.

http://schneidercams.com/Warranty.htm

Most new cars have roller cams to avoid this problem.

Oil Reccomendations based on talking with an oil industry "insider".

Torco Comments: Top notch base stock. MPZ additive package. High additive ppm.

Motul Comments: Top notch base stock. Z(zinc) additive package.

Redline Comments: Top notch base stock. Z(zinc) additive package.

This post needs to be stickied or a post with the same message/info needs to be stickied.

Here is a chance for H-T to do some real good.

That is one reason I have been using Mobil 1 Delvac diesel oil--5w-40. Since the main reason they took out the zinc and the EP additives (or a good portion of it) was because it can be damaging to modern cat. converters, the diesel oils have full EP additives because diesels have no cats.

Great oil. You can get it in the 4 quart tub.

Mobil 1 also has a series of 0w-30 "race" oil that would protect against this problem, and Amsoils line of diesel lubricants are pretty good as well.

MOTU, are people that are experiencing problems related to the new oils experiencing cam breakage due to lack of the high pressure lubricants, or are they experiencing lobe flattening?

It's a wear issue which can lead to lobe wear >> harsh valve motion >> heads of valves falling off >> broken cams >> broken motors >> broken hearts >> dejected souls >> and then finally, my favorite, the singing of the Swan Song "Woe is Me, feel bad for me folks, my motor is broke and the manufacturer won't help me.".

This is situation is made worse by the fact that perf cams are usually ran with more spring pressure and higher rpms than stock cams.

so would runing diesel motor oil like the kind stated above do more good or harm for a car with a cat? I always thought about running it but was a little hesitant because of the cat issues.

What about using a diesel oil such as Rotella?

The data sheet from Shell doesn't seem to have as much "stuff" on it as other sheet's I've seen. I use "stuff" because damn near all of it is greek to me.

Soda Popinski, wouldn't Piston Honda be a more fitting name on these forums? LOL! Anyway, since someone mentioned M1, didn't Mobile 1 pull a big "no no" and reformulate to be similar to "other" so called full synthetics.

Fortify "emission" based SL and SM Rated oils with something like this or just buy a race/motorcycle/diesel oil of the proper weight for your motor.

Well, I could have gone with a nice name like "JDM_SIR" but thought Master of the Universe would be more comical.

RM, where are "Bobby's" headers? I was going to dyno these like, about months ago. Now I am stuck with SMSP headers. Bob and Weave, is that a hair style? Glad you feel better, and are off the C****.
