I have the tool to hold back but that thing isnt budging, i can see the 1/2 breaker bar with a pipe on it bending and dont want to snap it. I have heard its not ok to use an impact gun on these. Is that just for tightening or both tightening and loosening ?

Using an impact to for tightening is a bad idea, torque it to 181 ftlbs.

My 1/2 snap on breaker bar was bending also with a 3ft cheater bar. Just keep at it. I slide the pipe all the way over the bar just in case. Mine made a loud crack when it finally broke loose.

just use an impact gun on it... the bolt is suppose to be torqued to 181 ft/lbs... so using a breaker bar is just a waste of time...

Ditto, I used an impact gun before, not a problem, however...bolt it on as tight as you can with conventional tools then hit it with the impact a couple of times.

haha, mine came un torqued for me....lol broke my lower crank pully and those belts came off..... I fixed it but i dont think it hurt my crank or anything

Does it come off clockwise or counter clockwise?

Recently I was reading of some bolt on the engine that came off counter clockwise. Could be wrong.

It is a normal thread. The only left hand threads I know of on the prelude are on the diff, and they have little arrows.

Normal way to come off is counter clockwise. (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey)
And the crank bolt has normal threads.

how can you say that? i watched a guy with an impact gun trying to bust one of my spindle nuts loose. he gave up with the impact gun and was like, "i dont know what you want me to do". i said, "why dont you use a breaker bar?" and he laughed and said it wouldnt make a difference. i asked him for a length of pipe, and it was about 4'. 36mm socket on a 1/2" drive and it was loose with one push. then i laughed at him.

I had this same problem about 2 weeks ago.

Mine ended up being cross threaded from the previous owner. We ended up having to use a 3/4inch drive impact wrench that put out 2,000lb/tq(normally used for heavy construction equipment), and it ended up snapping the bolt. That was a PITA!

the other night I broke 2 1/2 breaker bars and a 1/2 snap on 3 ft ratching breaker bar. I broke them on 36mm axle nuts but I did break them. Where as the impact gun took them off.

If you have a "good" impact gun it is better then a breaker bar.

I actually snapped a 1/2 drive prolly like 24 inch huskey breaker bar a few weeks ago trying to break an axle nut loose lol i had like a 7 ft piece of pipe on it and it wasnt moving. I went from like a 2 foot piece to a 4 to a 7 and nothing broke that sucker loose. I went a got an impact and got it off in like 5 mins.

I have used both methods, if you have a good impact it will work try using a 700ft lb in reverse impact, that is a good method if the breaker won't work.

ive done it both ways. both times between trying... i heated it up with a torch also between trys. helps sum, but dont heat the f**k out of it.

well i just tried a 500 ft lbs impact and that thing isnt moving. Who makes a 1000 ft lbs gun besides Ingersaw rand, mac or snap on ? How much does the IR run $$$ ?

Try to tighten it, then reverse it. I used my Dewalt electric impact wrench today to remove the crank pulley bolt. I had to keep it on there for 3 minutes before it broke loose. The Dewalt has 345lbs of tq.

If you need a stronger impact, get an electric one from Harbor freight tools. Thats the cheapest place I can think of.

I have a craftsman electric impact same exact specs as the dewalt and had it on there was about 2 mins and nothing. Heated the bolt and nothing.

I was thinking of getting that earthquake impact from harbour freight but it only goes to 625 ft lbs for $50 more i can get a husky that goes to 700. And the electric one i have is stronger than the harbour freight ones ive seen.

It just pisses me off that whoever took this off before prolly got their gun and just bottomed it out on the threads. What is it supposed to be torqued to anyway.. like 180 ft lbs ???

Put that impact back on there and just drill that *****. I had it on there for 3 minutes straight until it broke loose.

Never had a problem once I started using a 3/4" drive breaker bar. I use 3/4" F to 1/2" M impact adapters from NAPA. I've broken a few (3 or 4), but I haven't had a driveshaft nut or crank pulley bolt yet that I haven't been able to get off using this breaker bar. It's about 3.5 ft long, and I've had to use a ton of torque to get some bolts/nuts off, but it works.
