E85 All Motor Build?
I was just reading some of E85 thread's in the FI forum, and I wanted to discuss
the possibilities/options of using E85 for an all motor build up. After doing a little
bit of reading, you will have to run larger injectors than you would on the same
build-up running gas, because of the need to supply much more fuel to achieve the same energy output. Fuel mileage seems to be about 25-30% lower, but the
lower price at the pump offsets this and you would probably come out
comparatively from a cost standpoint.
The advantage I am looking at is the octane rating of 103 allowing the use of much higher compression for the street at a pump gas price. (after all said and done) So instead of getting away with say 11.5-12:1 safely on pump gas, perhaps we could run 14 or 14:5 :1 on E-85 on the street. (With the proper tuning and fuel support system)
The forced induction guys seem to like the E85, what do you guys think? Let's Discuss

i ran it this past season. almost 14:1 static compression. 550cc injectors, walbro 255, and the rest stock 94 fuel system/lines. went 12.0@113. never tuned it on racegas so dont have a comparison. drove it 480 miles to a BOTI race and back and got 24mpg going 80 on the hwy, racing every camaro and corvette along the way.

What did you make to the wheels, 230ish? What was the duty cycle on the 550 injectors?

E85 FTW!!! its basically 106 octane. you need an AFR around 10.5 so bigger injectors and possibly a fuel pump are needed if you are running stock.
its really sweet for forced induction because the intake charge will be much cooler compared to gasoline.

i believe currently the only place in california to get e85 is at the lawrence livermore labs, which you kinda need clearance to get into...
this is an interesting thread none-the-less.

yah roughly. car was 2150lbs. i dont know the duty cycle for sure because crome said it was over 100% but i know it wasnt. crome also said a gsr with a jackson racing supercharger and 440's was at almost 200% on 6psi and gas. which it obviously wasnt.

Re: E85 All Motor Build? (lohatch)
There is one gas station by me that sells biodiesel and E85. Because of this we've already started building alot of old supercharged and high comp big blocks for street rods and muscle cars locally.
My boss had his old Predator carbs set up to run e85 on his blown 392 hemi powered 32 roadster. He's planning on running the Hot Rod Power Tour this June as well.
Only station local that is selling it though but the farther west from here the more plentiful it is.
Consider this though:
A Fuel source that takes 60million years to refresh vs fuel source that the main ingredient has a 90 day grow cylce and gives off FAR less emissions and actually stimulates economical growth in the US instead of the middle east.
hmmmmmm
Corn Power FTW!

The lower fuel economy can be somewhat offset by the increase in compression ratio and certain tuning advantages that alky based fuels can afford you.

Outstanding......I am very interested in how it performs for you guys.
Anyone else out there testing E85, or have any experieces tuning with this fuel?

yeah, theres a boosted prelude somewhere in here thats laying down like 600whp on E85. i wish i could find that thread. affordable race gas is where its at.
