PRICE: honestly... if you shop around, and buy a used kit, dont cut any corners on new hoses and gaskets, sparkplugs, and whatnot.. i'd say around $1,000. before tuning.
old picture of my old setup: (new pics coming very soon of my ****)
Yes, i like the supercharger.... doesnt feel like a Honda anymore, it actually has torque from idle all the way to redline.
before the turbo spools.... yes, the supercharger would crush it on horsepower and torque. the turbo has no parasitic drag, so of course it will make more peak numbers. but the power curve and delivery of the supercharger makes it more predictable. i had a turbo SOHC right before this supercharger... (like a month before)
... and i do feel like the turbo had more top end power... would likely win in a freeway situation, possible a 1/4 mile race, although it would be close... the supercharger would definately get the jump and pull at least to the 330 mark, if not the 1/8th mile. if you plan on only racing on the streets (which are rarely even close to an 1/8th mile length before the loser shuts his car off) or if you plan on road racing..... the supercharger is the way to go.
if it were a 1/4 mile track car only.... of course i'd say turbo.
The installation/maintainence of the supercharger is MUCH easier...
install is simple, just like an intake manifold install, except you got to relocate the alternator and run a new belt. (which isnt that hard, the jackson kit is well engineered) these are internally oiled, and pretty much maintainence free, besides changing and tightening belts on occasion. (you need to change and tighten belts on any motor, right?)
the installation/maintainence of the turbo took a little more time, i had to take out the power steering and air conditioning... remove the bumper, cut, measure, cut, recut, and cut the bumper some more to fit the piping and intercooler (painted black in my photos, still visable if youre looking for it). well, i could have easily cut the bumper once to show off the intercooler like most riceboys do, but i wanted the 'sleeper' look. i had a pain in the *** fitting the turbo manifold and T3 turbo without halfway removing the motor itself... basically i had to bolt up the manifold, then crawl under the car, and bolt the turbo up squeezing my hands into tiny spaces.. fitting the downpipe was a pain in the *** too.
OIL LINES!
I friggan hate oil lines. once i got rid of one leak, another would spring up. then i'd get rid of that, and oil would come from somewhere else.
you need to tap the oil pan and the motor for oil fitting, then run an oil line to the turbo from the engine, and then to the oil pan as drainage from the turbo. (this is for lubrication and cooling of the turbo... burns on my knuckles show it gets hot)
i changed the oil on my motor every 1000 miles or 1500 miles, just because i knew this oil was getting hotter than it would on a normal engine.
then you got friggan silicon couplers... a turbo kit has so many weak points that its almost a waste. if you dont use hardcore couplers and clamps, you will blow off some basic crappy rubber couplers and clamps.
but with the right couplers, you should only have to re-tighten these on occasion.
installation on the charger is obviously easier... but its harder to get it to idle smooth. (which can be done, with patience) sometimes i cant even tell my engine is running, it idles so smooth.
they both have their ups and downs. i am NOWHERE near the end of my build for the supercharged car... but i do see some new projects in my future.
i've just started on my build, and havent tuned it yet... but even with a simple street tune by me, the car moves. very smooth and quiet... hard to tell that its fast until you look at the speedo and youre doing over 120.
the only way to tell that youre quick is because you get tired of shifting. LOL no need to drop gears on the freeway to pass another car.... leave it in fifth, give it some gas, and you'll go from 60 to 100 in no time.
the LOUD intake noise that honda's make is GONE... you only hear a loud whine from the charger... which sounds awesome from behind the drivers seat. sounds even better from outside of the car. you'll get plenty of looks from ricers or legit honda owners alike.
overall, i think my supercharged engine would crush a similar turbo car at the same PSI in almost any racing situation.
when i first installed the kit, i had the 5 PSI pullies installed, then i put an 8 PSI pulley on, and the car came to life, i now have a 10-11 PSI setup that i'm waiting to put on my motor the day before my dyno. not really hoping for crazy numbers.... just maybe 185HP and like 150TQ to the wheels.... which i guess is pretty good on a sohc nonvtec, with stock internals. and the torque will probably make peak numbers around 4500 RPMS. (just where VTEC motors start to wake up)
i'm happy so far.
BTW, i've had a nitrous B16 too.
dont get me wrong, a turbo system will do an AWESOME JOB.
but with my experience, i liked the supercharger better. but thats just me, i like the power delivery the supercharger gives.
turbos can also be hassle free, i just didnt have that sort of luck.
as far as internal work goes... i personally like HIGHER compression supercharged motors on lower boost levels. feels like a very strong N/A car. and boost isnt super crazy.
you could run a supercharger with the 8 PSI pulley and the correct header with maybe a cam and cam gear for under $2500 if you find a USED charger in good shape.
i havent got to dyno-tune my setup yet, only a baseline ( i have more parts and higher boost levels to install) but un-tuned on 5-6 psi i made almost 160hp and 145tq on a dynojet... but here is big chris' setup that was recently dyno'd on a dynapack.
