Hey everyone,

I just wanted to know if putting in 80W-90 gear oil into my transmission is bad for the transmission. Or would it actually help it out a little.

It is a manual tranny on a D16Z6.

your just supposed to use regular motor oil in those trannies. Why do you want to use gear oil? I am pretty sure that wouldnt do any good. Use what you are supposed to, motor oil. I use Mobil 1 synthetic in mine, just cause that is what I run in my engine.

It will straight expletive UP your tranny. Gearoil won't flow enough to provide lubrication to the 5 rollers bearings under the gears.........

The resulting heat will melt the nylon bearing cages, then tranny is pretty much junk after that.

Thank you for the post I am glad somone finnaly has a photo or 2 that show what putting gear oil will do to a honda tranmission.

Wrong. LSD equipped transmissions require nothing different.

Another myth. Honda did not even release MTF until about '98. Guess what they used before that?

EDIT: OP, just got to your dealer and get 3 quarts of MTF and be done with it. If you want to run Mobil 1 5W30/10W30 or even Dino oil that is fine too.

I ran gear oil in my transmission for almost 2 years. The reason I put it in there was b/c the input shaft bearing was on its way out and by putting the gear oil in there it actually quietened down the bearing. I pulled that transmission out b/c I got another y8 that wasn't making any noise for FREE!

I would never reccomend run a synthetic oil in your tranny, but whatever floats your boat

It's a myth that Honda reccomends Honda MTF as the prefered fluid for their manual transmissions? Gee, I guess my dealer lies to me. I know it wasn't ALWAYS used, but it's currently in use, and is the reccomended transmission fluid from Honda.

Honda went to MTF after the addictives in the motor were changed. If anyone bother to look it up, Honda reccomends 10w30 SF/SG motor oil. But with the cleaner burning oil, less zinc was added. Take some motol oil, and some sulfer and zinc, sell it ai $7 a bottle.

V8 guys are having problems with camshaft wear because of the newer oil. Alot are running Shell Rotella for diesels.......

I hope you referring to stock LSD tranny.. and i really wish your statment is true, cos this package is what i have now, and the price of these freakin oil is VERY expensive..

Nice package, but you can use Pennzsoil Synchromesh with the Kaaz. Like I stated above.

The KaazUSA shop car has about 45k miles on their 1611 LSD, I have about 60k miles. When I did order mind off here, I got a extra can of fluid, used both, then went to Synchromesh.

Think I paid $830 shipped with extra 2L of oil.

I have been running gear oil in my stock D16Z6 tranny for about 10,000 miles. Im going to change it to motor oil in the morning before I go to school.
How much damage do you guys think that 10k miles did to my tranny.
Im going to be pulling the transmission out in a couple of weeks to install new clutch, lightweight flywheel, and short shifter. What should I look for as far as damage.

I have tried Honda MTF, 10w30 motor oil, Redline MTL and right now I have Amsoil 5w30 Synchromesh MTF in there.

The amsoil has shifted the smoothest and crispest out of all of the other fluids for me. Second was the Redline MTL, then the honda, then regular chevron 10w30.

If you are going to use a 'gear transaxle oil' it must only be a GL-4 rated gear oil, as the additives in a GL-4 lube are safe for the metals inside honda transmissions. Don't use GL-5 in your transmission unless the transmission specifically takes it.

It's all marketing. Yes most dealers do lie. Most "tell" you they are using MTF, but you usually get good old bulk 5W30 oil. Sorry to burst your bubble. MTF is nothing more then a non-detergent 5W30 oil w/ some additives. They just released a new MTF that will S/S the current stuff once it is gone. The original poster is talking about a 92-95 EX/Si tranny and back then MTF was not even around.
