Default Help! Water leak on the rear hatch

I got 2 leaking spot on my rear hatch and its coming from where the rear hatch strut are. I removed both the panels and it looks like its leaking inside the roof somewhere?
I havent removed my trim pieces on the roof yet. Also I have no sunroof.

I'll try to get some pictures of this ****, it was raining like crazy today

ya, I have a leak too, and i have a sunroof. I will try to fix it when i get my dynamat. I don't want to take it apart to fix it and then take it apart again to install the dynamat. I have a feeling there is more to repair up there when i take things apart. ya post your pictures, i want to be able to see what i am getting myself into.

the roof welds. run the length of the car, are covered by two long strips of black rubber.

they get hairline cracks over the years, if you pry up the rubber a bit you will see them if you look up very closley.

most people never find that one. but if you dont have a sunroof and you drip at the struts, its coming through the roof weld, then hits the inner sheet metal the forms the inner side of the roof, and the gravity takes it down to the seam which is 2 inches from the hatch strut, then the plastic piece carries it downward to the strut.

sometimes the water also peels off and makes a left or right turn and collects a bit under the rear compartment, like where the rear seat would be, near the fuel pump.

i would say this is the most common leak point on crx's and most people give up and just garage them when its not that hard to fix.

just FYI something ive noticed over the years. its a sturctural weak point in the design of the car since its a stress point on turns.

btw im talking abotu CRX's here. i dunno if you meant hatch in your original post.

ill take a few pictures to illustarte better.

this guy did a writeup on fixing the issue, the images are down, but just read it to get an idea.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1034142

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by PandaHatch &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I decided to finally take on the task of fixing my water leak today after a week of non-stop raining. I figured out it was coming from the cracked seam sealer in the corners of the roof. Water would run down the sheetmetal in the inside of the car into the spare tire well, I could visually watch it run in. Here is my somewhat step by step fix on it. Make sure you have a good full day (6-8 hours) to work on this to do a good job on it.

First, you have to remove the hatch and begin to grind out all of the old seam sealer. It is best to use a 3M grinding/paint removing wheel and a flathead screwdriver in the small areas, a dremel attachment will aslo work here.

Next after you have cleaned the area of dust and debris use Duramix flexible seam sealer to seal the metal. This is probably a lot better than the 14 year old **** in the car already. This cost around $25 a tube, it's a 2 part mixture which you can use a gun to apply it, but I like to apply it to a piece of cardboard and mix it myself and apply it with my fingers (wear rubber gloves) to ensure it gets in all the grooves. It's a self leveling mixture so apply it generously it will all even out. This can also be painted (primed) right on top of.

I will post more pictures tomorrow with some primer on it as well as finishing it up, I ran put of daylight and had to let the seam sealer cure tonight. Enjoy!</TD></TR></TABLE>

im going to use his method.

Once I received my dynamat order, I will start tearing the interior apart including the roof. I will start another thread with pictures. I can see some rust flakes from the roof. I am hoping that its not as bad. But in Hawaii, the salt kills the car with rust if not taken care of. Thanks for the great pointers and post.

F!@#$%g-A- right man!!
I just dealt with this last week on my 90' HF. It has a crapy sun roof so I tore it out looking for a leak. No go so I gutted the whole cars interior and them went to the car wash. After it started I hopped into the trunk and there it was , plain as day from that stupid caulk.

Well done. I tried to silicone that crack but it didnt work. I guess I will have to pull up those black strips and try again.

Anyone have any hints at how to pull those out?

Thanks

I pryed mine up with a small screw driver but it won't go back down nice. There is a metal strip inside the rubber so try not to bend it much.

At the end of your rain gutter trim where it meets the hatch, you will probably see cracks in your body filler. That is where it is coming from, quick fix = gum.

Also if you are getting a leak into the rear tub, its probably coming from where the side sections of the headlights meet the center piece. As my car is sitting, I have pieces of tape over those gaps.

Taking the rubber strips off I figured they wouldn't go back down, so I half filled the length of the gutter with silicon and painted it black. Yes, ghetto, but my car doesn't have any paint on it.

I forgot about posting pictures!

I hit up the spots with epoxy mix, used toothpick or popsicle stick to ge tthe mix into the cracks and I hit it with a couple coats of primer filler. I shoould have spray it with a matching color paint but oh well!

Another leak report. No pictures needed.

It rained hard again 2 days ago and I saw leaks from the rear but not the same corner leaks. It was coming from where the door light was.

The problem is the rear spray nozzle for the rear wipers, you could have a bad seal or the nozzle could be loose. Either buy a new one w/new seal or remove it and put duck tape on that hole! Leak solved!

My car leaks from there too. I might just get them filled in with metal to just stop it all. More then likely not, but maybe. It's good to know that's all that is leaking, I might just throw some cocking on for good measure.

no duct tape! remove it, then silicon it shut.

you can get the silicon pretty neat and flat before it cures.

and it wont hurt the paint around it.

and its CAULK not ****. lol
