Default New Mobil1 SuperSyn

http://www.mobil1.com/supersyn/index.jsp

Wonder if it is better than the Tri-Synthetic formula or just simply marketing hype? I bought a case tonight at Wal-Mart, and hope to do a oil change by Monday. They claim it is better for high mileage/high stress engines, but we will see.

If it burns, it's usually too thin....

I am going to try the European Car Formula 0W-40 at the next oil change!!! Or maybe the performance driving formula 15W-50.....

I have a friend who races ARCA (think NASCAR). ANyways the engines don't get more high stress than that. He claims no one but the MOBIL 1 team uses it as it has a zinc deficiency (sp?) that often leads to connecting rod failures. Most use valveoline 20w-50 full syn

And does the Mobil 1 team always win or not?

if you can get up with an ams oil rep. you can most of the time get the stuff for about six bucks a quart and ams oil is leaps and bounds better than any other oil other than redline

Didn't Mobil recently change the tri-syn formula? Maybe this new formula is closer to the old stuff.

Yes, I am hoping it will solve or at least lessen the burning problems of the Tri-Synthetic formulation.

I believe the Tri-syn will be fased out and replaced by the "improved" Super-Syn.

I've never understood things like this. Nascar, indy, etc rebuild their engines after EVERY race. Ohhh wow, my engine lasted 200 miles! Big woop!

EagleR, bingo!! According to their data, Mobil 1 cut their zinc levels down to 0.75% for their SJ standard which is lower than anyone else. They even bragged about this on the back of their SJ bottles. Data on every other oil I ever saw was between 1.0 - 1.5%. Myself and others have experienced either mediocre or accelerated wear (piston slap at 80K miles) as a result. I can't imagine using this junk in a real race car. I'm 90% that most serious race teams that have Mobil 1 stickers on their car DO NOT use off-the-shelf oil. It's additive package is weak in some areas and too strong in others (for racing, that is).

I think all SL oils are now 1.0% zinc phosphate (ZDDP). Amsoil uses much, much more and that's why most of their oil isn't officially SL rated ... neither is Red Line.

As long as oil is flowing (as opposed to oxidizing, thickening and/or boiling off) it is doing its basic job whether it is dino or synthetic. What really helps prevent wear under stress is the additive package. The oil needs to carry this additive package to critical areas. Most oils have zinc phosphate (ZDDP) but some like Schaeffer, Red Line and a few others use a soluble molybdenum.

The real joke is that Mobil 1 has always identified itself with racing. I read the back of their new SuperSyn 15W50 bottle and it talks about Roger Penske using Mobil 1 and then in their bullet points they say: "suitable for amateur racing."

LOL!!

Um, what about PROFESSIONAL racing? Don't they always say that Mobil 1 is the best? Isn't Roger Penske a professional??

I used Mobil 1 for several years but I don't think I'll ever do it again. I have less and less respect for those guys nearly every day.

Thank you! I never knew if that was rumored or true. Looks like my info is right, and yah it is a big whoop if your motor only lasts 200 miles when it is meant and needs to last 500!!!

EagleR, you're welcome.

non-Vtech, my blanket recommendation is to go with something really good like Red Line if you are going to bother with synthetics at all. The mass-market synthetics have compromised additive packages and many of them are switching from PAO to hydrocracked mineral oil which is cheaper. I just don't think they are worth the price difference anymore.

SL "conventional" oils already have a lot of this hydrocracked base stock in them.

Valvoline Max-Life is a great buy for the money. Good base oil (Group III base - same as Castrol Syntec) and a strong additive package. All that for $2 per quart.
