----DIY How-to-Paint your lip!----Carbon lovers beware!!--56okay
Well as many of you on here like painted carbon, or like the front lips to be painted, but are not sure how, here you go.
---Before anyone asks, the lip was purchased for a very good price hence it is carbon. --
The sideskirts were also done using the same procedure.
The total cost was $43. Two cans of paint, one can of clear. The paint was purchased from the local auto finish store, (they will have your code) as well as the clear. The sandpaper used was 600 grit, and used wet (wetsanding). Regualr automtotive masking tape. I started around 12:00, had a couple Corona's, went for a swim, had lunch, and was done by 4:00. The key is having patience and relaxing.
Overall I am very pleased with the result. No orange peel at all, no blemishes ect. In fact, the finish looks OEM
Carbon does look good, but I like the look of painted lips, makes it look more complete, as if it wasn't just stuck on.
So here goes:
The orginal look
The essential item
Front bumper removed-look at those sexy Rays
Find something to support the bumper-I used two old deck chairs
Materials used
Wet Sanding the lip
The lip sanded down-Make sure there are not any glossy parts left.
Mask the outline of the lip first
The add a cover, newspaper works well
The paint. Use a back and forth motion, on/off/on/off, take it slowly, lots of thin coats
Let the paint dry, (15-20) mins, then apply clear using the same method
This is for all of you stuck in the rain, pool is at 85* clear skies
Then admire the finished product
If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them!

And I would have at least painted the top portion of the radiator support blue instead.

Re: (dreww..)
Lovin it, bro. Think this would work for me?
both my front and rear lips and side skirts are unpainted, stock. thats how they were on the 97s, the 98s + got colormatched The thing is, they are textured, would a lot of sanding do the trick for this?

Nice job! I dont understand the logic of you taking the bumper off the car, but you left the lip on the bumper. Wouldnt it make more sense to just take the lip off the bumper and leave the bumper on the car? Then no masking at all. Also, you masked the outline after you sanded it. Most people will mask the outline before sanding. That way, you dont risk scratching the already painted surface. Anyways, good job though. Looks nice.

I got the lip at a very good price, and haven't found one is ABS. Plus the fitment is great.

It is much much easier to paint the lip with the bumper off the car, plus it only takes 5 mins to do. I didn't take the lip off as its a pain in the *** to line up again, and didn't want to stretch the paint. Good idea on the masking

Yes it would. I also did my sideskirts the same way, but did not sand them.

That is a Mugen replica, which I use to have, and I don't like. The Spoon lip is very different.
