Default HOW-TO: Make your defogger work after Integra dash swap

I did the dash swap and the only problem I had was with the defogger not working. I'm sure there are others out there with the same problem.

The problem lies with the different methods in which the Civic and Integra deal with the defogger. With the Civic the timer is built right into the switch itself. So when swapping to the Integra dash you lose this function because with the Integra the timer circuit is built into the ICU (Integrated Control Unit.) You could swap fuse boxes for the Integra one, this would save you having to splice the Integra and Civic dash harnesses together. However, I'm not sure how many of the other plugs, if any, would need to be swapped for ones from an Integra.

With my electronics background, I was sure I could come up with an easy solution to allow the Integra switch to be used with the Civic defogger system.

Without further ado - the solution....

I came up with a pretty simple circuit, I didn't bother with a timer although I could add one later if I so desire. I wasn't so concerned with a timer since this circuit will always come up 'low', meaning once power is removed (ignition off) the circuit will remove power from the defogger and it will remain off until power is back and you hit the switch.

Parts
------
15k, 1/4 watt resistor (2)
3.3k, 1/4 watt resistor (2)
100uF, 25 volt capacitor (1)
irf630 mosfet (1) - similar mosfets will work as well
1n4002 diode (1)
dpdt relay (1)

I just hooked mine up with jumper wire on a pre-drilled pcb. Here is the schematic for the circuit....

Finally, here is how to deal with the wires from the Civic and Integra switches.

Civic
-----
1. Blue/Yellow - Connect to P3
2. Black/Yellow - Connect to P1
3. Black - Connect to P2
4. Red - Connect to Integra 5
5. Red/Black - Connect to Integra 6

Integra
-------
1. Yellow - Connect to P5
2. Black - Connect to P4
3. Black/Yellow - Connect to P3
4. Blue/Yellow - Connect to P2
5. Red - Connect to Civic 4
6. Red/Black - Connect to Civic 5

Have any questions?!?! Glad to help you out!

Also, working on a fix for the low fuel light. Our Civics don't have the low fuel senders. Therefore you need an Integra sensor or an eletronic solution

If you don't mind me asking, how did the dash swap turn out for you? I've seen too many with large gaps on the sides. I bought this black dash out in my garage with the plan to do the swap, but the gaps scare me. I like thing that look like they belong, if you know what I mean.

nice job on the defrsoter controller also!

The gap could be back filled with a black material... and i doubt anyone would ever notice....99.9% of the time the door is closed anyways.

I can take pics of my swap! I have slight gaps at the side but it doesn't bother me at all, doors are closed. The height of the dash worked out perfectly, I used Integra dash mounts. Still working on door panels as most people who do the swap are I'm pretty good with fiberglass, so I will come up with something.

If your civic door panels are the same color as your integra one's why dont you just heat them and slam the door so that it will mold into place for you.. That is what im going to do the only problem i have is getting black civic door panels.

Will work for 96-98 (schematic you gave only covers 96-98) Civcs NP. Hooks up exactly the same, just one of the Civic wire colours is different.

Civic
-----
1. Blue/Yellow - Connect to P3
2. Black/Blue - Connect to P1
3. Black - Connect to P2
4. Red - Connect to Integra 5
5. Red/Black - Connect to Integra 6

Integra
-------
1. Yellow - Connect to P5
2. Black - Connect to P4
3. Black/Yellow - Connect to P3
4. Blue/Yellow - Connect to P2
5. Red - Connect to Civic 4
6. Red/Black - Connect to Civic 5

its doesnt matter if the civic is 5-pin and the integra is 6? i dont know anything about electronics, so im just trying to get clarify everything before i jumpe right into my swap.

right it doesn't matter, the circuit is the interface between the two.

on the left you can see the wires coming from the back of the integra switch and on the right is the wires from the civic dash harness (plug was cut off)

There will be gaps, other than that I think it looks great in the car. I was very pleased how mine turned out. Like mentioned above, you could come up with a creative way to fill that gap. The integra dash makes the interior look so much better.

THANK you for coming up with this solution . i've been having to scrape my back window like a madman every morning. any updates on your doorpanels? mine are still cut out where the dash meets the doors. looks good when the doors are shut, but kinda ugly when their open. i was thinkin of backfilling with some black vinyl or somethin

I just pm'ed ya but THANK YOU for putting that diode across the coil! I have seen so many relays die because my peers did not use a diode! In my most recent project I used a host of latching relays and some 555's to build a backup timing circuit for a rocket I am building

A diode is an absolute necessity. I never use a relay without a diode across the coil, cheap insurance.

Rocket?!?! What kind of rocket? Sounds very interesting.

PM'ed back

so to get this to work you would be using the civic wiring harness wired to the integra dash switch thru the circuit board you made?

what about if your using a integra dash harness and integra switch?no civic wiring present. tia
