Default RPM needle bouncing question.....

Here's the situation, my car had a fouled out plug wire for about a week. While the car was missing, it made my RPM's bounce...EXAMPLE: If i had cruise control on at 65mph, the rpm gauge would be around 3k....With out speeding up or slowing down, the rpm needle would bounce up from 3k all teh way to 6k and than go back down. Now that i have replaced the plugs and wires, the car is no longer missing, and its still doing it. What could it be? Is it still reading a misfire somewhere, such as in the distributor cap?

Any help, suggestions, comments, concerns would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

it seems to me it should have something to do with one of the sensors inside the distributor, like crankshaft position sensor. i'm rather sure it's a problem in the distributor though. what's the year/make/model? later cars have the CYP sensor in the oil pump housing.

then yes, CYP sensor is inside the distributor. i seem to remember it having something to do with the distributor, although the CYP sensor is very difficult to get to. it's buried in there.

so what do you suggest? A new distributor? or a new sensor? It seems that if i hammer down on my car in HIGH RPMS the car still wants to miss alittle bit. My passengers can't tell, but i can just barely fill it missing....

So new Distributor? Yay or Nay

yeah, now that you mention it that sounds pretty familiar. i remember having a REALLY weird problem with my dizzy, and i kept seeing "hey, my tach needle keeps jumping around" and thinking "dang, when will i ever find somebody with the same problem as mine?". i was searching h-t and found like a hundred questions just like this one . . .

Well today it seemed like it was getting worse, and my RPM needle started bouncing all the way to Redline today while sitting at a light. It also seems that the car is starting to miss again at higher rpms (5k or so), i was passing a truck today and it started either missing or spinning bc it was raining....

I'm getting a dist. to try for a few days and if that don't fix it Im going to buy a new ignitor..

well the ignitor is in the dizzy so if you replace the dizzy it would be like fixing the ignitor and more. unless the other ignitor was bad.
I would say ignitor too.
Or if you can get a dizzy for cheap do it. and save the parts.

also check to see if you have any disconnect or fuxor'd grounds. BTW a good way to tell if the ignitor is busted is test it with a mulitmeter.

ok, so i haven't been able to get around to fixing my car but i have a story and a question. First:

So im driving today and im watching my RPMs and while im doing 70mph the needle falls all the way to 0....than hic ups/misses and back up to 3k rpms.....Than it did it again when i got off the express way, but this time it shut the car off. Now is this caused from the same issue or different issues?

Also how bad of gas mileage did you guys get when having this problem? I filled up yesterday and usually by 3/4 of a tank i have about 120miles on the tank, this week i had like 64miles or so...........Im going to swap out the ignitor today...Just wanted some feedback..

what dont you understand about check your ignitor. or fix your ignitor.

people ask for help then dont take the advice.

I am going to say it one more time test your ignitor.

Like i previously said i haven't gotten around to fixing it. I have been beyone busy and the guy who is getting me a new distributor for cheap hasn't gotten it yet. But now since my car just won't start at all im going to get a new one ignitior today and see if it fixes it. IF so yippie, if not i guess im going to buy a new distributor..

But my main question was, did this cause anyone to have bad gas mileage? I mean real bad? Im just trying to see if there is another issue i need to look into....

ya, i had the same problem about a week ago, follow these directions.. if this dose not help you need a new ignitor, this worked for me..

http://www.g2ic.com/tegtips/engine/10.html

and also look at that diagram on the top of the thread, it is kind of hard to see the ignitor, but there are 4 wires going to it and it is kind of on the bottom of he distributer. good luck
