Will an exhaust leak make your motor run rich?
Will an exhaust leak after the o2 sensor make your motor run rich? If so why is that?
I am running:
Hondata s200b
RC 750cc injectors
Walbro HP intank 255lph fuel pump
My car has been tuned and running perfect for over a year. Just since last night is when I started noticing a problem.
My idle is normally at 1000-1100 rpm set by the Hondata, but just recently it has dipped down into the 500s and surges up and down. On top of that, I am running extremely rich. The smell of gasoline and black smoke is coming from the tailpipe(which never happened before). Also, I've noticed my greddy EGT guage has read lower than normal when I am driving around on the highway. Normally, my EGTs are around 600 degrees celcius while cruising at around 3000rpm, but recently my EGTs have dipped down to 450-500 degrees celcius. The car also feels a little more sluggish while cruising, a very very slight hesitation can be felt as well. So something is definitely not right. Could it be anything else?
Any help/ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I just went to check my spark plugs, and each and every single plug is pitch black which is not right. Normally they are grey at the tip and black around the ring.

Do you have a check engine light on or anything? Something is definitely wrong, sounds like a sensor went bad or something.

Just went out and turned the switch to ignition on. CEL comes on as its suppose to and the light goes off after the motor is started and running.

Re: (booscivic)
which vacuum lines should I really look closely at? The BOV, wastegate, and boost controller lines look fine to me. And of course, if any of those lines were leaking, I would have over boosted, but boost is still holding steady.

If you are running in closed loop it will definately cause you to run rich. the o2 sensor is reading the exhaust and correcting the fueling to keep the engine in the 14.7 range. If there is a leak, then it cannot get the right reading to adjust the idle. running in open loop will not cause the ecu to drive the car rich, but it will give strange idle fluxuations and such.
I run mine in open loop with uberdata. before I changed my ssautocrap manifold out for a blox, I could tell everytime the ssautocrap cracked because of how the car would start to idle poorly.

isnt 14.7 extremely lean?

My leak is after the o2 sensor though..so I can't imagine the leak affecting it.
However, I am getting the datalogging capabilities unlocked on my Hondata unit Monday. Hopefully, from there I can see what's going wrong.

sorry for the late reply, I have been busy. 14.7 is the afr your ecu was programmed to look for in closed loop. When you start the car or go to wide open throttle, then you are in open loop and the ecu is running on tables. I did notice after reading that the leak is after the o2 sensor which should not cause problems with it running rich. Keep us informed after you datalog and maybe we can help at that point...
