You can take the light covers off.

But i dont recommend it anyways. They never will go on as good as factory fitted, and you WILL have aquarium in there.

seal them now, as they arent sealed to good when you get them.

then go to your local hobby store. buy Testors Candy Apple Red Transparent spray paint and a can of clear. clean off the tails with acohol and spray away. or take it to a paint shop and have those guys do it. i did mine myself before i decided to go back to 90-91 stocks

Also Krylon makes a Red Stained Glass paint that works well. You can get it at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc....Make sure you put a clear on it though

Here are some pics of another guy that did them...

having used the transparent red paint a number of times with mediocre results, and having used transparent red vinyl to red-out my RSX tail lights, i recommend going the vinyl route instead of the paint. there is a site online that sells transparent vinyl by the foot in red, yellow, grey and blue. i'll try to find the link.

with paint, you have to mask off whatever you don't want painted. then you have to do multiple coats. you have to worry about the paint running, or dust, fingerprints, etc getting in it. then you have to clear over it. after a few months it will fade to a lovely shade of pink. when i made red/clears from a set of all clear EG tails, it took a few hours to do 3 coats and let them dry, after masking off everything.

with the vinyl, it took me about half an hour to red-out my stock RSX tail lights, and i plan to do the same with my CRX. it's a simple procedure to apply without getting air bubbles. clean the area of any dirt or dust. make a solution of water and dishsoap and spray it on the area you are about to put the vinyl on. apply the vinyl (somtimes it is easier to pre-cut it) to the wet surface and start pressing out all of the water/air bubbles. as you do this, the adhesive will stick to the plastic and your bubbles will be gone. use a hairdryer to warm it up and stretch it as needed, and use a razorblade to trim any excess. then you're done, and it won't fade nearly as fast as the paint. if you don't like it, just peel it off.

rexerin,

what is up with the vinyl that you used... would a sign shop have it? What is its intended purpose? I like the vinyl idea... does it look simillar to the rex that toad posted pics of?

thanks.

yes it would be red, but its not "paint" is has an opaque level, so some yellow would be visable, when you tint over say light red and dark red the end tint value is different because you have different starting points.

Im wondering how close it would be

ANYWAYS, started on the front of the car

starting working on staining the clear corners and front turn signals

wiped down with "methyl hydrate" and sanded

pretty much copmplete turn signal, needs clear coat

started work on the corners
base coat yellow, gotta get more orange tommorow

maybe ill get a lense from the wrecker tommorow and spray on it...

No problem, when it is sitting in the garage or in the shade it looks red all over. As soon as any light hits it you can see that the color is off you can still see the orange behind it and when the turn signal comes on it will NEVER look red, it will be the messed up color. And it really isn't worth messing up the OEM lights for something that isn't going to look right. Please just trust me on this, it seems good in theory but once executed it quickly turned into poo poo.

i'm not going to lie, when i saw this and read the first post...i saw those altezzas...ughhhh

you can use the stock tail lights to do this DIY right?

or do you have to buy altezzas (ughhhhh, i don't want to give the creators of those any money, i want them to go bankrupt)

the consencious is you gotta get altezza's

painting of the two different color surfaces is visable

red + red = red
red + amber = not red

use craft paint. However, the lights might melt the paint if it gets hot.
