Valve spring install tool
hey does anyone have any better pictures of either of these valve spring intallers?
im making my own and its hard to just go by the pictures. i already made the 2 side arms, the center rod, and the arm/handle thingy made but im wondering about the actuall part that pushes on the retainer and how that connects to the arm

Ive used that one before, and I think it sucks!
I dont have any pictures, so its a bit hard to describe.
the part that pushes on the retainer is a round tube. about 1/4 inch up from the bottom of the tube it has a rectangualar cut out. that is the spot where you put your keeper around the valve.
it doenst really "connect" to the arm. from what I remember it has two holes for differenet pivot points. the arm goes through the main rod.
hope that helps...

Re: Valve spring install tool (Rob Dizzle)
thats pretty much what i figured.... im using square stock for the handle so i was just going to use a couple tabs coming off the bottom and put a bolt through the round tubing i got to press on the retainer. if nothing else i will at least through a couple pics up when i have a finnished product.

Re: Valve spring install tool (JCushing)
i got it and its alright. u definitely need the head bolted down to something or u will work ur *** off. it needs a longer lever for leverage too. i had a pain using it to install my valvesprings (rocket motorsports). it does work but it could be designed better.

Re: Valve spring install tool (1 2 NV)
i have that one and its awesome, very simple to use, and i can install them very quickly
the actual lever doesnt connect to the rod it just has those pivots points he was talking about.

Re: Valve spring install tool (1 2 NV)
how could it be made better? i can make the arm any length i want, obviously so thats not a big deal. i dont think theres alot of clearance when doing the intake side for a huge arm though. and yeah im building this one so i can do it with the head on btw....

Re: Valve spring install tool (JCushing)
i have the same one and it works great..but like (1 2 NV) said it needs to be bolted down..or have the head clamped down..i had this problem and (big teggie) gave me that suggestion..so i have a nice sized soft jaw clamp that i use with a piece of wood..works great..but with the short leverage handle and aftermarket valvsprings u need to put a little muscle in it to keep it stable..if u come up with a longer handle that bolts to the bar..i would buy one, let me know...

Re: Valve spring install tool (bruceleeroy)
like i said im just using 1" square stock for the handle cut at an angle about where it meets the edge of the head. could jsut as easily be made out of flat stock like the ones i pictured. nothing very complex.

Re: Valve spring install tool (JCushing)
ok heres some pics, the copper part was just for testing, its kinds flimsy but its easy to work with. i was just testing for length with it. still need to put some pins on the bar so it doesnt move. bottom line it seems to work, the pics show a LS head with b16 intake springs and you can see from the last pic i can bottom the springs out. i might still drill more holes for the center bar on the top later well see how it goes. now i just have to make a permanant pusher thingy and try it out.

Re: (Eddiebx)
lol, the one i use looks like a giant c-clamp and its threaded. so no gorilla pushing on a bar, it stays there until i am done working with that valve

Re: (wantboost)
does it hold the valve on the bottom or does it hold the bottom of the valve spring. i bought a craftsman one that clamps to the spring but it doesnt seem ton want to fit in a DOHC head.

Re: (JCushing)
the C clamp style requires having the head off the motor.
The only three things I would recommend on your design: throw in a brace on each upright that makes it more stable. Just a triangle that hits the foot and the upright.
On the feet, cut out some notches so it can be bolted to any head, not just a B18/B20.
And the last thing, Keep the copper pipe like you have it (just making the holes on each side wider) only make longer tabs where your bolt goes through, drill holes at various places to allow adjustment for angle.
Honestly, your setup looks killer. Any you have what? 10-15 bucks into it, a few hours of time that you will apreciate for years... Any thing else? Did you sweat?

LMAO first off it was such a hot day that my shirt was soaked after a few hours of workin. and youd be supprised how much metal suplies are at home depot... but yeah you could buy this stuff real cheap from somewhere else. oh it doesnt need any bracing, im thingking i could place a hook up to the rod and hoist an engine out with this thing.

Re: (JCushing)
well it worked like a champ! i installed my Rocket springs yesterday and i was very please at how easy it was. leverage was no problem either. i did have to modify the arm though, needed to put another 30 degree bend to clear the firewall.
heres a pic of my installed rocekt springs next to stock (this is in a non vtec b20z btw)

Awesome! I was about to buy an ebay compressor, but now I'm going to Home Depot instead. This will be a sweet opportunity to test out my new welder. Good thread, those pics helped a ton
