hello-

my tranny makes some odd noises. At idle, with it in neutral, it sounds like a tin can full of little rocks. When I depress the clutch, the noise goes away. Kind of like a crunching grinding noise.

If I am accelerating through first and second gear, the noise becomes more audible. Around 4th gear it is hard to hear but it still lingers a little.

Any suggestions?

I had that happen in a VX tranny but only at idle with the cluth in I have not taken the tranny off the motor to see yet but maybe the release bearing is going out? That is what someone told me my problem might be but I am not 100% on that being the issue.

just a thought but maybe your flywheel bolts or something is coming loose

I have a similar noise but usually on start up and then goes away, except when engaging a higher gear at a low speed. It is driving me nuts.

Could it be your throw out bearing or is that the opposite way?

Could always try changing th trany fluid and hoping for the best... it is the "forgotten" fluid.

i had the same problem in mines, replace the throw out bearing and the problem is still there, maybe it is the input shaft bearing, but when i check the shaft for plays, i found no sign of play at all

cheapest solution first! Thanks ill try that.

And thank you for the input shaft bearing idea... definately a possibility, this tranny has 190k on it.

sound deff like the throw out, if he hears it when he not on the clutch and doesn't hear it when he is holding the clutch and its louder as he goes faster THINK ABOUT IT that's how a throw out bearing works it goes against the pressure plate when stepped on and is released when let go.

yeah i sayd ISB, but it sounds more like the tob.
since the noise goes away when the input shaft bearing it still moving; when the car is on gear moving with clutch pressed in


edit: thinking more about it im leaning again towards the isb

when you take it apart just change the tob for fun anyways...lol

I've done MANY of these I gaurantee its the input shaft or main shaft bearings. The reason why it does it when his foot is off of the clutch is because the gears are turning when your off the clutch and when your on the clutch they stop turning so the bearings won't make noise. Also your throw out bearing isn't turning when your driving so it wouldn't make noise when you are driving.

yes, your symptoms, are a classic example a bad input shaft bearing
its def not the throw out bearing

and anyone who says it is, hasn't worked on transmissions enough

when the car is moving and on gear, with the clutch pressed in, the gears are still moving..

I've had this same issue and it was not the throwout bearing, the clutch, or the flywheel. I replaced the ISB and the noise got better, but it was still there a little. I think it was some of the other mainshaft bearings internal to the tranny, but it definately was not the throwout bearing. There was another member here, Petrv, he had the same issue but documented it very well. Check out his story here:

Hopefully that helps some. It sounded like he spent countless hours replacing things and reinstalling the tranny, so be prepared.

if it helps. this is the current problem in my tranny. SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS!!! and i KNOW its not the throw out bearing.
this same problem has only happened to me 3 other times in my cars. and about in 5 other peoples cars that i have fized or replaced the bearings
