Default EP3 DC5 10.2 rear disc brake upgrade for 94-01 Integras

EP3 DC5 10.2 rear disc brake upgrade for 94-01 Integras

General overview: I have read another 10.2 rear disc brake upgrade that utilizes the dc5/ep3 caliper holder only. This procedure uses the entire caliper with one catch. Left goes to the right and the right goes to the left. Using the left dc5/ep3 caliper on the right side of the integra requires swapping of the hand-brake lever located on the caliper. I will get into details later. The swap also requires bleeding of calipers while they are uninstalled from the car since they are now upside-down.

Hardware:
Stock Integra with rear disc brakes
Complete rear calipers from rsx, rsx-s, or 02-05 civic si
10.2 rear disc from 02-03 civic si. You can use redrilled rotors from dc5, but hub is much larger and new holes will have to be precise.
Brake fluid, I used about a quarts worth.

Tools needed:
8, 10, 12, 14, 17mm sockets and wrenches, pliers

Steps:
1. Raise car and remove wheels. If you need a how to on this, God help you.

2. Remove this shield thingy. There are 2 10mm bolts.

3. Remove cotter pin beneath pin (green), remove two 12mm bolts (red), remove spring with pliers (orange – this step can be done later)

4. Remove brake line (14mm), make sure you don’t lose any washers. And here is a better view of the cotter pin that needs to be removed.

5. Remove two 14mm bolts behind rotor and take caliper off car.

======edit: the below step is unnecessary. Use dc5/ep3 caliper as is. ======
6. Remove spring from dc5/ep3 caliper. Remove 17mm bolt on both calipers. Swap the hand brake cable bracket and reassembly caliper except for the spring, it makes the reinstall easier.

======edit: the above step is unnecessary. Use dc5/ep3 caliper as is. ======

Note (4-11-06): for step 6
I just reinstalled the stock gsr calipers. As 95 Integra stated, you don't have to swap the e-brake bracket. Now that I actually had a chance to re-examine the brakes, I wouldn't do that step at all.

7. The dust shield will need to either grinded or banged a few millimeters. If using the hammer method, it’s best to use a piece of wood to cover the abs groves to prevent damage.

8. Remove old rotor and install new one. You're going to have to remove the screws, so whatever method you chose, just don't strip the screw.

9. Hook up brake line and bleed brake. I used the old rotor as spacer to prevent the caliper from closing up. Speedbleeders were installed to reduce headaches.

10. The rest on the install is reverse of removal. Just when you get to this part;

it is best to do the two 12mm bolts first (red), cotter pin (green), then the spring (orange).

Bolt up the rest and get ready to stop a little bit faster.

Impressions: Overkill, easier to just upgrade the rear pads. But it looks so much better

thanks 95 integra for all the advice. He did this swap first, and showed me the way. Any questions or comments feel free to ask. feedback on the clarity of my instructions would be nice also.

-edit- don't forget to adjust e-brake cable on the inside of the car and a few recommendations from 95 Integra.

Also thought I would mention that to allow for a little more slack in the brake line I suggest moving the mounting location of the hose (only 1, 10mm bolt thats in the bracket attached to the line behind the spindle) to the opposite side.

just used pliers for both task. the spring really isn't that stiff.

i'll hopefully have a review by thrusday. but it really won't be a fair comparison with the stock system since i'll be upgrading the fronts also.

What is the advantage to the different calipers? Are they dual-pot calipers, larger surface? Just curious as I am new to the Honda world.

rears are single pot, but larger diameter disc, and larger pads. more surface area.
plenty of clearance, i think the stock 14" spear will still work on the backs.

fronts are dual piston, but still sliding type.

one more thing that I was wondering about on my drive today, because I think what you have done is great, however isn't the reason calipers are placed on a vertical side or on top to keep them from collecting brake dust, road grime etc. ?

good info. looks like i need to do that to my setup...

when you bled the system, are the bleeders on the top or bottom of the calipers when they are mounted?

i used the old caliper as a spacer when bleeding the brakes. I placed them upside down of install so the bleed valve would be on top.

I don't really understand what you are asking. The caliper is positioned vertically in a stock position.

ok I see now, I thought when you were using the old brake to bleed them that was the final install and I thought it was on the bottom.
good stuff

The set was about $200. I figured that if i had to replace the old disc and pads anyway, i got a pretty good deal.

just a quick question. could you order some 10.2 rotors instead of redrilling the rsx rotors? and can this be done to the front as well?
