ats 4.9 tranny vs. LS tranny comparison VIDEO now working!
Well, this post was locked in the road race forum. First off, I'm not trying to show my car's appearance off, my intent in posting this video was to spark conversation about gearing, acceleration, etc. That kind of thing isn't usually discussed here, so that's why I'm kind of reluctant to post it here. Oh well, the other thread was locked, and .RJ told me to put it here instead.
Anyway, here's the deal. About a month ago, I bought a friend's (Owen the soyboy on here) ITR tranny with an ats 4.9 final drive.
Before the new tranny, I had a stock 95 LS engine with stock LS tranny, stock LS flywheel, and oem, slipping clutch. Car ran a 14.90 @ ~93mph as the set up was.
Anyway, I installed the new tranny over this past weekend, along with a clutchmasters 8lb flywheel, and an Exedy oem replacement clutch. The difference is sooooooooOOOOOOOoooooooooo huge as far as how much fun the car is to drive!
So I made a comparison video of some pulls before and after the new tranny to compare how gearing affects the car's acceleration, etc.
Unfortunately, now that I have a strong set up, my shitto all seasons aren't going to cut it, so wheel hop owned. Oh well.
And don't make fun of my granny shifting y0! I had a camera in my face, and a friend hanging over my shifter all akward like.
You'll notice that some main differences between the two is A) the 4.9 tranny revs A LOT faster. B) the 4.9 tranny's rpm's fall far less after each shift. C) shifting and traction are crucial with the 4.9 tranny.
This is what my car looks like:
Anyway, here are the results.
You'll need quicktime to play the video. If you don't have it, you can download it at http://www.quicktime.com .

Sorry about the poor quality. If anyone wants to help me host a much better quality version, it's a little more than 13mb, and looks a ton better than the link above.
My own conclusion is that the tranny obviously keeps me in my powerband (I'm probably pushing like 110 whp y00000!), and gets me up there quite a bit faster than the LS gearing did. Limited slip is also a great thing compared to the open diff on the LS tranny. Fourth pulls harder than third did.
I just need to buy a short throw shifter (yes, the above footage is on an oem shifter ), and some decent tires. I'm sure with both of those, the final mph difference would have been more than the ~1mph I gained in the above video. Either way, the car is fun to drive now, and to me, that's more important.
Thanks for watching.

from the split screen, looks like you reach 140 at the same time with either tranny . .either way, that ITR tranny is the way to go over the LS tranny

lol. I swapped the tranny on Saturday, and it took a bit longer than I had anticipated. Didn't finish until about 10pm that night.
I live off the parkway near Charlotte Beach.

The reason for the difference is wheel hop, and my slow shifting. I'm still stuck on the short throw of my EF. After reviewing this vid, I've realized that a short throw shifter is crucial. I'm not the greatest driver anyway....
Thanks for the kind words.

I like the video.. it helps explain some things to me.. But let me ask this. Say you go with the setup im doin and go Turbo.. would u suggest stay with the ITR tranny or have the LS tranny for the longer gears? I have the stock si tranny out of my 92 Si... but have a mostly stock96 ls motor.. i just have the bolt ons... With the tranny i have NOOOO Top end what so ever.. but my low end is raw.. i can pull 9.8 1/8ths but fall down to 15.4 1/4s.. what would ur suggestion be for me?

It all depends on what kind of driving you're going for, and how much power you're planning to put down. If you're planning to make a decent amount of power (180-250whp), I'd recommend a tranny with something around a 4.4 fd, such as the USDM ITR tranny. IMO, that's the perfect tranny for daily driving and drag racing.
If you're going for drag racing, get yourself some good slicks!
And yes.... I know how you feel with the LS tranny. Third gear is like hitting a brick wall with the stock engine.
Also, a stock 92 civic si tranny won't bolt up to an LS engine (d-series aren't compatible with b-series). If I were in your shoes, and planned to put anything over like 280whp down, I would just invest in a good LSD, and call it a day. The car will pull plenty hard with that kind of power.
Good luck.
