Benefit of higher WHP @ lower PSI
I am in the midst of choosing a turbo for my setup and have found you can make substantially more power with a larger turbo at a lower PSI versus a smaller turbo at a higher PSI.
I'm probably going to get the larger turbo and run a lower PSI, but since Im at a lower PSI can I make more WHP (compared to a smaller turbo) safely?
This is on a stock block, professionally tuned.

I like the big turbo at low psi (my setup) not sure of the advantages but seems better to say I made 350whp at 7-10 then saying I made 350 at 12-15psi. I would like to know also

doesn't matter how many pounds of boost your running, your stock block will handle only so much whp. A smaller turbo creates more back pressure on your exhaust, which is why you have a lack of hp with them. A smaller turbo also creates higher intake temps, which further reduces your horsepower. I would shoot for the same peak whp or higher, despite the same peak horsepower, your powerband will look much better.

Bigger turbo = more lag. If you pick the right size turbo for your setup you will have a good balance of power, instead of waiting all day to have a high peak with low boost.

More WHP at a lower boost level is nothing more than some bullshit to brag about. The smaller turbo will spool faster.

A stock motor can handle only so much before **** starts breaking. Doesnt matter if you have a tiny *** snail or a big *** one. Once the point come where the motor can't handle anymore it wont.

bigger the better, obviously within reason (watch the efficency range) a bigger turbo will give you more air flow at a given psi than a smaller turbo=more power. Use the lag for traction. i'd rather have my t3/t4 60-1 than a smaller turbo

Pick a turbo that fits your motor and be done with it. Putting some monster turbo on your car is not going to make more power than the correct sized one. Say for example a t3 is the ideal size. Going with a 100mm garret is not going to make any more power at lower boost.

As an example, TYGSR made 375 WHP on his car with a PT67 at 11 psi. Would a small T3/TO4B do 375 at the wheels? Probably. Would it do it at 11 psi? Not a chance. A larger turbo makes more power at the same boost level than a smaller turbo does.

i would say just find a turbo that fits your setup on the compressor map. that is by far the most important part of choosing a turbo... generating boost efficently. if your stuck between two turbos, remember the smaller one will have less lag, which doesn't matter since its a drag car... and the bigger one will have more growing room.

I am thinking bigger turbo with less boost will heat the air less then a smaller turbo running higher boost.....lower air temps are good.

There is one thing that I've started to notice about choosing a turbo.
If your even thinking about going with a large turbo, and just running low boost...GO FOR IT.
The likely hood that you will be wanting more power in the future will surely be there, if infact your thinking of the big turbo now. Might as well go bigger now, than regret it later.

bigger turbo at lower psi just means a steeper power curve which is not exactly healthy for ur block. with a good tune its not bad but if ur going to run low psi then a big turbo is not needed and you would be much happier with a smaller turbo for lack of lag. u should really only get a bigger turbo if you plan on getting close to its max some day.

I think you guys are nuts with your big *** turbos. My SC34-E (.63ar 57trim) is plenty big and will feed 525hp yet is dwafted by some of the turbos out there. Why go bigger and get the extra lag? 80% of you are only making in the 300s.

The thing is, I might swap it for a built d16 sometime in the future, so I dont want to spend 600 bucks on a turbo that leaves me with a power "ceiling".
Also, I really dont care about this motor, its not a big deal if it blows, d-series are a dime a dozen.

Lets clear up the sizing thing, one is "BIG" in relation to the other, but not really big in the scheme of things. Here are the two turbo's Im chosing from-
A) Garrett T3
Compressor- .42 A/R 60 trim wheel
Turbine- .48 A/R 68 trim wheel
B) Garrett T3/T04e
.48 A/R turbine
50 trim
Stage 3 wheel
A) Garrett T3
Compressor- .42 A/R 60 trim wheel
Turbine- .48 A/R 68 trim wheel

thank you, finally someone with a Realistic and Help insight on the question and issue at hand. seems like most people on HT buy Turbos just so they can jump on a bandwagon or so they can say that they made XX amount of HP @ XX amount of boost. they don't consider assembling an efficient set-up.
you don't need a big turbo to make decent power. you should also be realistic and consider your long term goals when choosing a turbo.
btw, i used a basic T3/T4 Turbo from CheapTurbo.Com in the passes i took in my sig. i'm not breaking ET records but i think its pretty damn good for a New $525 Turbo

Personally I like the idea of a larger turbo on low boost. Just don't go too large on the turbo. It comes down to what your goals are, and do you want to spend the money up front.
