Default Gathering EK B-series wiring information ...

*** UPDATED AUGUST 2006 ***

Here I've gathered up all legitimate EK wiring information on frequent wiring issues people have when performing an OBD2 B-series engine swap into 96-00 EK civics:

96-98/OBD2a CIVIC CX/DX/LX/EX WIRING INFO

1) If reusing a CX/DX/LX engine wire harness you will have to perform these wiring mods to this harness:
a) add wiring for the VTEC Solenoid (VTS) & VTEC Pressure Switch (VTPS)
b) perform the IACV mod
c) add wiring for the Knock Sensor (KS) - IF - using an OBD2 DOHC VTEC ecu or non-reprogrammed OBD1 DOHC VTEC ecu
d) possibly extend the 2nd 02 wiring (if you're using a US OBD2 B-series ecu)
e) perform the OBD2a CKF mod - click HERE
Before, I mentioned to swap the CKF plug over to an integra CKF plug, but this wiring trick is much easier to do.

2) 96-98 Civic users can use a 5-speed <U>96-98 EX engine harness</U> to complete their engine swap if they do not want to perform the mods listed in #1, with exception to #D & #E. The 5spd* EX harness has all of the A-C mods integrated from the factory. The only downsides is that you will have to wire in the 2nd 02 sensor manually if using a US OBD2 DOHC VTEC ecu. Using a 5spd EX harness is virtually plug n' play with the exception to extend a few wires and perform the CKF mod (#E).

*Using a 5spd EX harnesses will greatly cut back on performing most of the wiring mods listed. Make sure you get a 5spd EX harness and not an AUTO EX harness! The EX AUTO harness is designed differently than the 5spd EX harness; you will run into obscure issues with an auto EX harness, that I have yet to figure out.

NOTE: You <U>CANNOT</U> use an OBD2 integra engine wire harness in any 96-00 civic because of its 2-piece design. EK civics all use a 1-piece design engine wire harness making it impossible to use an integra engine wire harness in an EK chassis.

3) OBD2a wiring information/diagrams can be found on my technet site here, under the wiring section:
http://www.ff-squad.com/technet

4) If you plan to use a 99-00 Civic or 00-01 integra ecu into a 96-98 EK civic, you will <U>NEED a OBD2a-&gt;OBD2b jumper harness adaptor</U>. Reaonsbeing is that OBD2a & OBD2b ecu plugs differ and are incompatible with each other. A handful of people sell this type of ecu jumper here, including me.

----------------------------------------

99-00/OBD2b CIVIC CX/DX/LX/EX WIRING INFO

1) Same wiring info as OBD2a in regards to using a CX/DX/LX/EX engine wire harness, but respective to <U>OBD2b ecu pin out locations</U>.

1b) Honda changed to a smaller distributor(dizzy) plug on all 99-00 EK Civics (CX/DX/LX/EX/ except Si model. This smaller dizzy plug is <U>incompatible</U> with OBD2 B-series distributors. You will have to either change change over to an Si dizzy plug, 96-98 civic dizzy plug, or 96-01 Integra dizzy plug in order to be compatible with a OBD2a/b B-series distributor.
Some images to help understand...

96-98 civic / 96-01 integra dizzy 'big' style dizzy plug:

99-00 civic small style dizzy plug:

2) OBD2b EK non-VTEC civic owners have an optional choice of using a 99-00 Si or EX engine harnesses (5spd). Again, there is no need for you to add VTEC wiring or perform the IACV fix because like a 96-98 EX harness, its already pre-done from the factory on the OBD2b Si / EX harnesses. The CKF info remains the same for the EX harness. The differences between an OBD2b Si and EX harness is the distributor plug and CKF plug - Si uses a B-series dizzy & CKF plug.

One issue that might arise is the 2nd 02 sensor if using an Si coupe engine harness. You will have to manually wire in the 2nd 02 because the Si engine harness only has the primary 02 sensor integrated into it. The 2nd 02 is part of the cabin harness on Si coupes & I think 99-00 EX coupe's as well (correct me if I'm wrong).

3) If you want to use a US 00-01 integra ecu in your 99-00 civic, you need to have the Immobilizer removed from the integra ecu or else your civic will not start. Also, when using a US 00-01 Integra ecu w/removed IMMobilzer, the fuel pump pinout "A16" needs to be moved to over on slot to "A15", in order for your EK to start (fuel pump pin location differs between OBD2b civic & integras). You only need to perform this pin change if using an 00-01 US integra ecu's in a 99-00 civic. If you plan to use an Si coupe ECU, there is NO NEED to perform this pin swap because Si coupe ecu's do not have an IMMobilizer, nor does any 99-00 civic ecu, only 00-01 integra ecu's do. Don't forget that if you ever switch back from using a US 00-01 integra ecu to an Si coupe ecu, switch the A15 pin back to A16!!!

4) 3) OBD2b wiring information/diagrams can be found on my technet site here, under the wiring section:
http://www.ff-squad.com/technet

Code 91 Issues - pertains to both OBD2a & OBD2b vehicles
There's a MIL code (91) that some of you might get. This is for the fuel tank pressure sensor or "PTANK" as honda labels it. This happens when using a US OBD2 integra ecu in an EK civic, but it's also chassis specific related - as in some civics have this PTANK sensor while other's don't. There are a few fixes for this annoying code and you can read my article about it here:

http://www.ff-squad.com/technet/code91.htm

to all that have helped out...you know who you iz!

what's up Katman, its been a while since we talk, back in the Hybrid days. what ECU would this be that your showing ? I pretty much know what has to get done when using a jumper harness and a P28 on . let me know if this will be of any help to you .

If using a 99-00 Si Coupe harness, no IACV fix is needed, but there will be one 1 extra wire at the distributor which needs to be either cut or unpinned since 99-00 EK's use an 8-pin dizzy plug, correct?? This is one thing I'm not super clear on, the 8 & 9 pin plug issue. CX/DX EK's have an 8-pin dizzy plug & Si coupe has a 9-pin dizzy plug...i know that, but wuts the 9th wire for on the Si coupe plug?
</TD></TR></TABLE>

I used the above Si harness for a 99 B18C R motor, and I also had one too many pin on the harness side of the distributor. But alas, everything works like magic...no hassle.

Looks like everything is correct from the diagrams I have and use, but I will double check with my other manuals.

Other than that, all looks good. I'm surprised you picked up on the fuel pump pinout on A16 to A15. Even I missed on that.

SPOONfdEK...
Wasup, long time.
The diagram is meant for 99-00 EK & 00-01 DC2 vehicles, but the plugs shown are from a 00-01 ITR ecu.

Mario...
ok thanks!

As long as the B18C-R is a JDM version and you use the JDM ITR ECU, you can use a US 96-98 EX harness on this engine no problemo. You won't have to worry about any IACV fix either. All is plug n' play n' go. You'll need to extend a few wires, but thats about it.

A problem is if you plan on using a US OBD2 ECU on a JDM OBD2 engine. The JDM OBD2 engine has missing OBD2 sensors that a US OBD2 ecu would look for ala a US OBD2 would throw a number of MIL codes. Such as the CKP sensor (which is integrated on the oil pump, JDM OBD2 engines don't have this sensor), VTEC pressure switch (JDM OBD2 motors don't have this either), 2nd 02 (which is no big deal to add), and couple others I can't remember off the top of my head right now....having tech overload, right about........now.

yup. my diagram above is suppose to be aimed for 99-00 EK ecu's and 99-01 integra ecu's.

A8 = secondary 02 sensor
A23 = secondary heated 02 sensor

C1 = primary 02 sensor
C16 = primary heated 02 sensor

Thanks EE_Chris..

So basically here's what Info I've gathered on the IACV issue:

- you need to know what type of IACV your using and what engine harness you will ultimitely use w/your engine swap, whether you own a 96-98 or 99-00 EK civic.

- All 96-00 5-SPEED VTEC models (5-speed is the key here) mainly 96+ EX coupe & 99+ Si coupe and HX/D16Y5 engine, uses a 2-pin IACV, which explains the reason why you don't have to do this IACV fix if you wind up using an Si coupe or EX engine or HX (5-speed/MT) engine harness for your B-series engine swap.

Here's the slight tricky part...
IACV's & engine harnesses from a A/T (auto) D16Y5, ALL (AT & MT) D16Y7's, and AUTO D16Y8/EX engines all use the 3-wire style IACV. So, if you plan to use an engine harness from any of these, you will have to perform the IACV ecu pinout fix and plug change.

Now that pinout fix is this...
At the ecu plug 'B', move pin B6 (black/blue wire) to B23 (should be an open pinout). B15 is the 3rd wire and is not needed anymore; so un-pin it and leave it hanging, tape it up or whatever, just get it out of the B15 pinout location.
The ecu pinout fix is done.

(I'm using a Y7 engine harness for an example)

Now, you need to fix the actual IACV plug thats on your Y7 engine harness. Remember its a 3-wire plug (will have pictures of this plug soon); we don't want that plug because it's not compatible with a 2-wire IACV which is on the B-series intake manifold. If your B-series engine has a wire harness on it, cut off the IACV plug from the harness, match up the wire colors then cut+splice it or repin it to the Y7 harness, but DO NOT re-use the ORANGE wire. Leave it hanging or whatever you wanna do with it...that orange wire is bad and unneeded.
The IACV plug fix is done.

For shitz n' giggles..
I was wondering if a 3-wire/Y7 IACV would fit on a B-series intake manifold, I hear it doesn't, but if it did, you wouldn't have to perform the second portion of the procedure above (IACV plug fix), you'd only perform the ecu pinout swap.

...that's about it for the IACV fix.

As a conclusive reminder....
you do not have to perform any of this IACV mod'ing if you use a 5-speed EX, HX, or Si coupe engine harness in your EK; nor do you have to wire any vtec components up!

If anyone else has some additional info on this, please post it up.
I thank Tony Jackson and EE_Chris for their help on this and all of you who had informative replies.

Even if the 3-wire did fit onto a B-series manifold...what would control it...an ECU thats meant for a 2-wire?

2-wire IACV's use a spring & plunger arrangement. This is why when you unplug its connector, the idle should always drop, as the spring has now pushed the plunger in its closed position, blocking available air flow.

3-wire IACV's are a rotary type (which can also control a greater amount of bypassed air), which requires 2 control wires. The control wires 'tug' at the rotary mechanism to keep it in a certain position. If you unplug its connector, the idle should NOT drop and if you refer to the Helms for setting an idle that uses this IACV, you'll note that you should NOT unplug it, like the 2-wire style.

In conclusion, you'll never be able to use a 2-wire IACV with a 3-wire ECU, nor a 3-wire IACV with a 2-wire ECU.

With all this information, the question now becomes: If you own a 99-00 Civic, and would like to use a Teg ECU withOUT an adpater harness, what ECU's are directly plug-n-play with the 99-00 style of ECU connector?
