So in April, I got an offer in the mail from TCF, stating that if I: A. opened up a free checking account and had two recurring direct deposits before May 31, or B. opened up a savings account with a minimum amount initial deposit, that I would receive a free Ipod nano. I opened the account, brought in the actual offer that I received in the mail, and they set up the account, and I subsequently went to my employer and changed the direct deposit to the new account.
Well, I was told that everything was set up fine for the promotional offer by the teller, and so that was that. But no, it wasn't. Because August came around, and I had still not heard anything from TCF about receiving it, so I called the branch and talked to the service manager. At first they tried pulling the "we can only see you records for the last three months; we cannot confirm that you've been making this recurring direct deposit every single Wednesday, since April." So I told them that I was sitting in front of my account page in the online banking section of the website, veiwing every single transaction, back to the April 10th initial depost, and the April 17th initial direct deposit, which has taken place every single Wednesday until this last Wednesday, October 8th. Then, they agreed to look into it further, and low and behold, they found that there was no reason I should have not received it. Then they call me back a few days later, and told me they were out of the Ipod. I raised the flag, and told them that it's not my problem they didn't administer the promotional gift in a timely manner, and that it was them who fuccked up. So then they told me that they would get back in touch with me, which they did about four days later, at which time they pretty much told me nothing that was conclusive, just that I am due the Ipod. They told me they would call me back when they get more info on it. That was about three weeks ago. So basically I've been going through the complete pain in the ass of having to pay all my bills using two different checking accounts every month, just to get the Ipod, and it turns out it was just a complete farce, just a ploy to get more customers in there. After talking to a service rep today, which ended in my calling the company a joke and hanging up, I withdrew the balance and closed down the account, after threatening that I was going to, which still didn't result in even a suggestion that I was actually going to get what I had coming to me for the past six months. Cliffs: -In April I receive a promo offer from TCF stating that I would receive an Ipod Nano for opening up a free checking account with two recurring direct deposits before May 31. I bring this into the bank, and have them clarify that I am satisfying my end of the deal, and should receive the Ipod. -Over the months, I've been directly depositing my pay from my primary job, at midnight, every Wednesday, starting on April 17th. -A little over a month ago I inquire with the branch manager as to what the status is of my reception of the Ipod. After getting BSed several times, I come to the conclusion that I was never going to receive the Ipod in the first place, and that the false advertisement basically baited me in to open an account. |

how much was the initial deposit to receive the ipod? seems like too much trouble for some little gadget.

Raise hell, and especially be sure to tell them you'll close the account and put your money in another bank that won't dick around with you, or your money.
Many banks are hard up for capital these days... threats can get you everywhere.

Wow, as if it couldn't get any worse. I go the the TCF homepage, go to the "contact us" section, and guess what I get? The address, and no telephone number. So I call and some moron picks up the phone, and tells me that I CANNOT call my local branch, that they could take email the branch and have them contact me? Yeah, so I can wait for another phone call that's not going to come? Right.... Looks like I'm just going to have to print the transaction history, and go in there swinging, figuratively speaking. Honest to God I have never seen a financial institution with such low standards for hiring tellers/CSRs. Nobody I have ever spoken with in the comoany, at any level, has sufficient competence to even handle a simple deposit transaction without fuccking something up.
I'll be back in a bit with results. |

Wait but its only saturday. is the branch not open on weekends? you can't go in there like a ragin maniac and demand your money back? It'd be alot better/effective/funner to actually demand your money back in person.

But it sucks that the price of the Nano has almost surely dropped since I opened the account, with the advent of all the other mp3 technology, much less the Ipod products that have been introduced since then.
