Default C&C please - some vacation shots

Just a few shots from my 2 week vacation. I traveled from as north as Vigo, Spain to as south as Figeira da Foz / Coimbra, Portugal. I got sick for a few days which just so happened to be the days I had planned to go to many sites like the ruins of Coimbriga, Palace of Bocaco, Fatima, and many other beautiful sites. First time really messing around with the camera so some pics might not be 100%. I tried not to edit them, kept them as I shot them but the ones I did edit I noted them.

Most shots = D60 w/kit 18-55mm VR, some have circular polarizer filter, all other basic UV filter

C&C is welcome on any and all []

Fortaleza in Valenca, Portugal - lighting was tough. Clouds would come in and out and... wifey was hounding to take the pic since we were running really late [:D]. I'll be taking a wide angle next time but I want to really cap it well, and without the sun flaring down so much.

Park shot in Valenca, Portugal

I just liked this apartment complex in Valenca, Portugal

Night shot in the home town Friestas

Uneditted church shot.

Editted church shot. I think white balance was off a tad but old school churches have some halogen, some fluerecent and this shot had some daylight all clashing. I took a slew of shots and this one editted came out the best :/

Tower of old Coimbra University (built 1290)

Main staircase of one of the buildings of old Coimbra University

Night shots of City of Vigo, Spain. I really want to cap a good one but ranged in between both shots. I was a tad tipsy so I might not have used the right settings lol

My drunk as a skunk realizing I didn't take any pics for a few days shot [:D]

I've got more but most are portraits and family pics under nice daylight and most came out well. It's these pics above I want to improve on

TIA

I love checking out other people's vaca pics.

Did you shoot in raw or jpeg?

All above were highest quality JPEG. I did shoot some in RAW though but haven't converted any of them yet.

true... I always shoot raw unless I anticipate running out of memory (not saying you should, it's just what works for me).
But in the case of shooting jpeg, if you find trouble getting the correct whitebalance, consider coverting to B&W for a more appealing image.

I think your night shots would benefit from that.

On the edited church shot, your processing has brought out a lot of magenta on the wall (I'm sure you noticed).
To fix that, copy your existing layer and reduce the saturation of the reds/purples...
Then you can mask off any areas that you don't want affected.

I'll give that a try Jake.

Any particular reason why I should start shooting in RAW? I've yet to use the Nikon software and in my case it was an issue of card size (had a 2gb and 4gb and I planned to shoot a lot more but I got sick for a few days which was most of my planned photo shooting... always next year!)

EDIT: Nevermind I find some good info online
http://www.rangefindermag.com/...w.tml

I always thought RAW was like shooting jpeg but it allows more freedom in post processing to correct wrong settings. I think I'll be shooting in RAW more now
