Looking for some help. I set up my wireless router many months ago, everything was fine. It worked correctly, it's used for Xbox LIVE. I had some computer troubles, so I just reformatted my computer completely. Now, I'm guessing my router needs reconfigured, but I'm having trouble. I went on the NetGear's website and went under my model, WGR614v7.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v7.asp

The router came with a CD, the software to set it up. I'm guessing thats how I did everything the first time. Now, I'm without the CD. So, under Firmware I downloaded Initial Release, figuring this is what I need to set everything up. It saves with the extension .chk and I'm confused on how to open and figure this out. I downloaded a program, googled on how to open the file extension, downloaded FileCHK. No idea what I'm doing with it. Any help is appreciated.

Have you reset it from the reset button in the back of it?

The firmware you downloaded from the site isn't something you install on your PC. Think of it as the the "operating system" on your router, and that's prolly not what you need right now. You need to be able to connect to your router first. I'm assuming your using a PC, if so, go to Start >>> Run >>> Type "cmd". Now type "ping 192.168.1.1"

What do you get?

Request timed out.

How to install the router:

1. Plug the ethernet cable coming from your modem into the internet port of the router.
2. Take another ethernet cable, plug it into the ethernet port of your computer and then plug into one of the 4 remaining LAN ports on the router.
3. Make sure the computer is set to obtain an ip address automatically.
Right click on network adapter, select properties, double click on internet tcp/ip and make sure it is set to obtain an ip address automatically.
4. Unplug the power from the modem, router and shut down the computer.
5. After a minute or so, plug in the modem, 30 seconds later, plug in the router and 30 seconds later restart the computer.
6. When the computer comes back up, click on Internet Explorer and run the setup wizard.

If the setup wizard does not come up, check to see if the computer gets an ip address from the router.
How to check the ip address:

Go to start, run, type cmd, hit ok, at the flashing cursor type ipconfig. You will get an ip address, subnet mask and default gateway (router). For example,

192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

Type the ip address of the default gateway (router) into the internet explorer address bar and hit enter.

This didnt work either. It's not like something isn't hooked up right, it was never unplugged or changed. Just reformatted my PC.

go into ur command prompt, for vista, search cmd.

for XP, go into accessories, system toosl, and look for command prompt.

Type ipconfig, and look for ur "default gateway" . (192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1) That ip is ur routers homepage, so type that in ur browser(http://192.168.1.1 or http://(insert ip here), the login is admin and password is password, and it either should set things up automatically.

To make it faster, you should do it manually. cancel the setup if u can, click on basic settings.

Check on no for login. and under it, check automatic for everything, apply, and done.

If you're using a cable modem thats attached to the router, detach, set up, and re-attach.

the ip's u gave above, which one is the default gateway.

Did you power off/on the router?

try to unplug every cord on the router, except for the one from your computer to the router.

Whats lights are displayed on the router, is the checkmark light on? is the wireless signal symbol flashing? After refomatting ur comp, did u install ur ethernet drivers?

Take a look behind the computer at ur ethernet port to see if the link green light is on.

Or check device manager to see if your drivers are installed.
