This is a weird topic. I am taking 2 classes at OSU this summer. One is PS546, politics of the Mideast. As you would guess there are several Arab students in my class. I walk in with my usual venti Starbucks and receive a verbal onslaught. To repeat it here nicely, I was told that the CEO of Starbucks gives several millions of dollars per year to Israel and I shouldn't buy coffee there.

The next day I met for a study group for Chinese language class. I had stopped by Caribou Coffee as it was close by. My good friend, Anna who is Jewish was a little pissed at me for going there. She told me that Caribou Coffee as a whole supports the Palestinians- and I shouldn't go there.

What the hell?! I have never heard of this kind of stuff in my life but in the past 2 days it's coming out of the woodwork.

Have you guys heard of this???

I haven't heard either of them being supporters of any country, people, or organization.

Quick google searches revealed:

Howard Shultz, the chairman of Starbucks is an active zionist.

In 1998 he was honoured by the Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah with "The Israel 50th Anniversary Friend of Zion Tribute Award" for his services to the zionist state in "playing a key role in promoting close alliance between the United States and Israel". The Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah funds israeli arms fairs chaired by the butcher of Jenin - General Shaul Mofaz, and the zionist propaganda website honestreporting.com.

From Snopes:

Claim: An Islamic bank is the majority owner of the Caribou Coffee chain.

Status: True

The impression many people are taking from the message quoted above is: "Oh, no; Caribou is owned by Islamic militants, the same people who are trying to kill us!" That isn't what the message claims, however. The protest was that the chairman of the First Islamic Investment Bank's supervisory board (which advises First Islamic on issues of Islamic law regarding its investments) was also on the supervisory board of the Union for Good, a coalition of charities (such as the London-based Interpal) providing various means of relief to Palestinians. The message notes that there is "nothing wrong with a charity to help Palestinians" but then suggests Caribou Coffee should be shunned because of two sentences from the introductory paragraph on the Union for Good's English-language web site:

The continuing aggression from the occupying forces against unarmed Palestinians coupled with the blockade, the destruction of the resources of state, not to mention random attacks on innocent children, the elderly and women as part of a collective punishment campaign has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and the wounding of thousands more. The Al-Aqsa Intifada is the latest of a long line of affliction faced by the people of Palestine. Its ancestry dates back to the massacre of innocent men, women and children in villages such as Deir Yaseen and the illegal occupation of Palestine in 1948.

Take that how you will I guess. I don't drink coffee, so I guess I don't have to worry who my dollars are supporting in that instance

Every dollar is a vote though, pretty much regardless of what you are buying.

Ironic. Go to a certain Starbucks in NOVA and you will see dozens of Arabs hanging out, occasionally including members of the Saudi Royal family and the bin Ladens. It is also a car show, with all the oil-rich kids.

Thats nothing. Don't ever take either brand into your Accounting class. Then you will also be dealing with an instructor giving you shit for spending your money on such stupid stuff. I'd be willing to bet they would have you calculating how much you spend on that stuff in a year.

I have never heard either rumor but quite frankly I would tell both groups to STFU. The most dangerous place in the world for someone to be is standing between me and my morning cup o' java. For realz!

Not sure if that is rhetorical... But the one on Route 7, west of Tysons (past 123). There's also a gym in there, which is one of the top local halal markets (okay, perhaps not really "halal," since it is mostly Arab guys looking for blonde chicks, which aren't technically "allowed.") We used to have acquaintances in that group, so I've done some time out there.
